sandymere 8,263
Sounds like "surgical emphysema". Often resolves on own depends on what started it. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003286.htm this is humans and a bit scary bit will give a little background. Was there any injuries i.e puncture wounds or heavy knocks to the area. Perhaps good idea to get a little advice.

sandymere 8,263
Sorry was a little rushed yesterday. I've had this a couple of times in the past usually 2nd to skin tears/puntures near an articulating area such as a joint, twice to the inner thigh were it joins the abdomen due miss-judged jumping over barbed wire. Both cases once stitched resolved without further intervention. Basically air is sucked under the skin through the hole by the movement. It is possible to get similar without the wound but i've not had experience with this. I'd have a close look the exclude a puncture wound or infection, monitor to ensure it's not increasing, rest and keep a close watch on general condition. It's alway a gamble giving information without seeing something so I'd always recomend getting expert help. good luck sandy
sandymere 8,263
same thing happend to my whippet x , she ran into a plough machine and puncturd her chest , its a horrid sound , was air trapped inside her , she had to have an injection , to start to release the presure , , get to VET asap mate , It feels horrible and a little bizarre anyone will know it as soon as they feel it. The injection was probably to let the air out of the space between the lung and the rib cage, hollow needle, so the lung could re-inflate. A pneumothorax is likely with a chest wound as its the lung can get punctured and so air is pumped under the skin from inside and the lung will partially collapse. A pneumothorax is a vetinary emergency and will require re-inflation for all but the smallest and treatment for the causeative factor, such as a fractured rib, but this is less likely to be linked if the "bubble wrap" is away from the chest ie the inner thigh. As with all things the best bet if get advice from a specialist such as a vet etc.
