Bona 0
You may have done this already, this is how i do it. Cover the floor with earth, leave it a week or so to settle, so theres no bare cage showing try to minimise ur time around the trap, glance over to check not walk upto it Try different bait, fresh rabbits work best for me Hope it helps Quote Link to post
dogs-n-natives 1,182
tips please on geting foxes in cage trapes been trying for years ? Ive found its a waste of time trying to trap foxes in the countryside. Much better off using properly set snares! But if the fox is comming in around farm sheds or other buildings or structures, especially in urban environments, then a cage trap, set somewhere where it dosent look to obvious can work well. Use a bait which matches what would be found by the fox in the area. Hpoe this helps. Quote Link to post
Guest oldskool
the only thing i ever caught in mine were silly cubs or the odd cat... there was a thread on here about using fish oil as an attractant and setting the cage in the middle of bales of hay kinda like a hut with only the open door visible.. filling the floor of it with soil is essential IMO... bullet 125
the first time i set i fox trap up i used rabbits for a good week with no results, each day i checked the trap i got a wiff of fox smell, so i knew he'/she been about, so i changed the bait for a frozen trout and the next day there was a fox in the trap Quote Link to post

Rolfe 2
Best fox bait ever is a dead white chicken complete with feathers if you can get one. Rolfe. Quote Link to post
OldTrapCollector 377
Best fox bait ever is a dead white chicken complete with feathers if you can get one. Carnegie, back in the 1800's, used to advocate the use of a dead cat or 'vermillion' as the premier fox baits or attractants . . . OTC Quote Link to post

OTC I don't doubt it for a minute OTC..........but getting hold of a dead cat when you need one could prove tricky. Or maybe not if next doors moggy keeps crapping in my garden. Rolfe. Just want to add that I caught 100 plus per year when I was keepering, in snares, and a dead cat in a midden works a treat as a bait!! Good luck! Quote Link to post
simmo 0
Usually catch mine on rabbit, but pheasant and chicken are just as good. I tend to find that I catch them when the bait has gone rotten. Probably gives off more scent. Only had a few this year as the weather has not got cold enough and there seems to be plenty of food about for them. Simmo Quote Link to post

Guest oldskool
i think size is the answer i lost a rooster last night and i've set the trap near the pen.... i havent tied the door on it yet because i had the idea of baiting the front of it and then as the bait gets taken i was going to set bait further and further in untill the fox is confident enough to walk in and get caught... i think with a trap that size he would be alot less warey of it???? simmo 0
what sizes is that trap simmo. About 6 feet long x 2.5 feet wide and about 3 feet high. Found the smaller ones I've had dont work as well. Simmo. Quote Link to post
