what is the best dog for the job

My advice would be to go for something with a fair turn of speed and not too big.... 'BUT' stick to one dog, put as much time and effort into it as possible and i'm sure you will be well rewarded. Trying to 'bring on' two dogs can be very difficult training wise and (just sometimes) one or both can fall out of favour with you whilst starting them. One is more than enough for someone just starting.

Very true, stick with one. A whippetxgrey x colliexgrey, try get one from parents 23 to 24ins.

A dog 24ins will be just right for rabbits, and big enough for anything else

Aye, but a bulky bull cross wouldnt get the catch rates that a whippet or whippet cross would on rabbits. And they are very headstrong and can be a handfull especially for a novice handler.

Get a beddy whippet will be ideal for the job. will be more suited for all ground and quiet.

most of the crosses sugested will do the job. but its important you get a dog that you like the look of . as you are going to spend a lot of time with it . some like em with a jacket on and some like em smooth. the choice is yours. i would be looking for brains a good turn of speed about 23 to 24 inches. pick what you fancy. then give it all the time you can. you'll get plenty of good advice of this site to help you through the training process. but it is important that you get a dog you like, otherwise it becomes hard work rather than the pleasure it is supposed to be. enjoy the experience and good luck

all this advice is fair, read and learn as much as possible, and yea stick to the one dog, then maybe bring a pup on when your dog is comfortable taking what you require, time is the best advice, spend tiem be patient, good luck

i have 40 yr's in experiance with hunting dog's/lurcher's and the best dog iv always liked is a bedlington whipet greyhound 21-24 inch pref.
