Squirrel_Basher 17,100
We were out all day Sunday ,doing the rounds of the earths on a local estate. We tried for a mark all morning but although a few places stank to to human nose ,the terriers said no .Fresh draw was everywhere and padding to match but you have to trust the dogs .We walked further than wed ever bin on this estate ,looking for that one earth that would hold .As we rounded a bank i saw a fox jump out the dead bracken but of course it skipped over every hole in its bid to put distance between us.Only had the .410 so a shot was out the question at that range .Back to the keepers house and he said to try a gulley that has cubs every year .Ive ferretted this bank but knew of no proper earth but as we parked up overlooking the gulley i could see a cracking hole on the other side ,freshly drawn and i knew we were in luck .The terrier chosen for the job was collared up and let loose and she made straight up the bank to this hole .I nearly beat her there ,so bad was my need for a dig .The bitch bayed just inside the hole and this got fainter as she pushed it back .This was a new earth to us so we had no idea of the depth or where it would end up .Netted the hole she entered and a small rabbit hole nearby just incase but we wanted a dig .Gave the bitch a while then found her with the bellman .Four foot deep, ten metres to the left of the main hole .Couple of spades out and wollop, fecking rock .Traced the slab to its edge then found a gap ,as luck would have it ,right where the bitch was .Too small a gap for the normal spade but just right for the 'chibler '.We had to dig down three foot between these slabs but eventually broke through right on charlies back .No fear of charlie pushing forward as this bitch is a cracking terrier and charlie wanted out .I refrained it from doing so and seperating dog from fox ,my mate shot it .A vixen with an unusual black throat and belly .Never seen one like this before so a study was needed .She was a veteran with only one canine in the bottem jaw and a well healed tear from nose to jaw .She was full of cubs by he feel of it but this is pest control . dogs-n-natives 1,182
Ive caught 1 fox with that same dark belly before, a young dog it was. And on a nearby estate there was a large dog fox shot by one of the guns, with the same coat. Nice work Edited February 26, 2008 by dogs-n-natives Quote Link to post
