allways aproach the ferret from the front steady & calmly a ferrets eyesight is'nt to good & is easly startled its reaction is to bite & bob back down the hole & the more frustrated you get the more you snatch the more reluctant it will be to come out catch 22 or let it clear the hole & block its retreat with a foot or spade before calmly picking it up,hope it helps Pritch

Agree with that. Offer the back of your hand and pick him up with the other whilst hes distracted, but dont ever snatch at him. Good luck.

I just wait until mine is completely out of the hole before I pick her up. If she's in 'one of those moods,' I try to put my foot in the hole she's just come out of.

this is quite an annoying thing that a hob of mine would do, but not all the time, only when he was hyped up. try running your hand, palm up, along the ground just before you pick the ferret up. as others have mentioned slow and steady is the name of the game. if you continue to get nipped then gently force the part of your hand/finger that the wee bandit has bitten, into its mouth. it wont like it and soon enough it will probably stop this habbit. good luck

my polecat jill is a good worker its just when you try to pick her up from the holes she trys to bite you and goes back in the hole any one no how i can prevent this

I find they become a little more aggresive when they come into season. My ferrets are handled everyday so i dont get the problem with the biting. I know a we irish guy who used to pull there teeth out and obviously that stopped the biting. He done this so the ferrets wouldnt lye up with the rabbit if they killed it underground. I just thought i would mention that and i don't recommend it. Just a we bit of useless info ma man.
