problems with my polecat

my polecat jill is a good worker its just when you try to pick her up from the holes she trys to bite you and goes back in the hole any one no how i can prevent this :hmm:

If you've netted a rabbit you can tempt her out with that. Brian Plummer mentions a ferret doing the same in his book, apparently he bought it cheap from a gipsy and before he worked it, it was soft a your pocket but the first time out it latched onto his hand. I think he ended up drowning it to get it off.

same shes realy tame but i think she just gets a bit wound up and excited and if you dont catch a rabbit out of the first borough its a pain

Think you just answered your own question there

hello ferrets can start behaveing like this if you rush or try to grab at them when thay come to the mouth off a whole you should pick up the ferret slowly and calmly many ferrets get this problem when people are lunging a them whch makes them reluctant to come out i have bought many ferrets over the years that work fine and are very tame but have the same problem as yours due to being messed up by the learner ferreters grabbing at them . as for intiseing the ferret out with a rabbit it will work for a while but the ferret soon comes wise to this and in my opinion only makes it worse when thay come wise to the rabbit trick youve got no hope . hope this helps

allways aproach the ferret from the front steady & calmly a ferrets eyesight is'nt to good & is easly startled its reaction is to bite & bob back down the hole & the more frustrated you get the more you snatch the more reluctant it will be to come out catch 22 or let it clear the hole & block its retreat with a foot or spade before calmly picking it up,hope it helps Pritch

Good advice and let it smell the back of your hand where it cant get a hold on you :victory:

dont rush to pick her up when she appears at a hole, a few of mine will bolt back down if you try to grab them, think they must know the funs going to end, back in the box, I just let my jills get on with it, if they appear at a hole, 9 times outta 10 they will walk to the next and go back down, doing their job, if they start walking away from the holes, thats when they get picked up no fuss
