Fox Famine is Over!!!!

DEKER.low velocity rounds ie:22rf short cb:s etc only deform at low velocity when they strike/make contact with a solid object they do not disintergrate.on the other end of the scale high velocity rounds of the type v-max and the like will disintergrate when hitting a solid object .this is what they are desinged for.i have a 17 rem that i shoot nothing but 20 v-max through it, its chronographed at 4350 fps when this even hits grass it breaks up into small fragments that are less destructive because they lose velocity so quickly.i use this combination for foxes because a lot of the land i shoot on is surrounded by houses and if i were to miss [which i do]then i know with a backstop these tiny bullets are not going to end up in someones living room wall.

iv no doubt all the folks on this site who own 22rf have shot charlie on more than one occasion with it but i wouldnt choose it as my no1 for mr c. its down to the person pulling the trigger to decide if its logical to use the 22rf before any other calibre,if you dont use it then you reduce the chances by a big margin of doing something you may regret.losing your f.a.c and maybe your freedom will i hope make folk think twice.i aint trying to teach grandma to suck eggs here just putting a sensible opinion forward .its good we all have an opinion .

discuss! :hmm:

It was mentioned in an earlier posting here but can we all open our minds a bit and stop jumping to conclusions!

I'm not sure where you are going...and I do not have a first choice gun for fox. I use the most appropriate gun and ammo for every situation to the best of my ability.

When I'm shooting in a Hay Loft next to a stable full of 40+ horses and 30 yards from the owners house at night I am most likely to use a .22LR with 40g HP subs and a moderator (I do not use caps or shorts or longs or shotshells or high velocity HERE).. they aren't going bouncing anywhere, at last count there was more than 40 Tons of straw bales in there!!! During daytime when the horses are out and the owner awake I "may" even use a 12g.. When I'm out in the fields at all times of the day and night I "may" use a .22LR but probably a centrefire. There are some very good and sensible reasons for NOT using the centrefire or shotgun at night in these circumstances ...like causing a stampede, horses being spooked and injuring themselves and the owner and neighbours getting real pi**ed off with the noise (All centrefires are still very noisy at night even though mine ALL have moderators). I use the most appropriate tool possible with the most appropriate ammo at all times!

What on earth is all this I have highlighted above about losing your FAC??

Now.... on top of all this my Rimmy is certificated for small ground game and vermin and foxes and zeroing and target and a moderator and expanding and probably a few other things I've forgotten!. Putting it bluntly if this pi**es off a lot of people because their rimmy is not then....

To further enforce this I can assure you that I am one of the best, most accurate and SAFEST shooters you will find, but I will NEVER take the shot if it isn't safe whether I hit or miss! I spent 10 years in a .22 Rimfire club, making the club team after the first week, 2 years later I was team coach and stayed in the team for 10 years until I left the club! I am now Secretary of a Home Office Approved Fullbore Club at Bisley and run my own Game & Vermin Control Company. I have no intention of doing ANYTHING that is going to put mine or anybody else's safety at risk, or ANYTHING to risk my FAC!

So can we now please stop talk of high velocity rimfires bouncing around tin shacks and the like!

I'm not looking for any congratulations, I'm simply trying to make the point that I'm not a spotty 15 year old asking if it's ok to shoot deer (or pheasants) with my air rifle.

My first consideration is always safety and I am very well aware of the effects and potential effects of a great many cartridges...but no ...before you ask, (unlike most 15 year olds) I don't know it all and never will!

The point made by someone else that foxes are vermin apparently is not correct .According to my fao ,they have been put in a category of their own purposefully to prevent the wholesale use of the .22 rimmy for fox control .Shooting foxes without it saying fox on your ticket is a violation but........................

Exactly, they don't want people specifically using 22LR for the job. However, as I mentioned before, legally, foxes are classified as vermin, so if I shoot one on my Vermin ticket, I can't see how that would stand up in court, since the ticket never actually defines its version of vermin (because if it was defined as 'vermin except foxes' then obviously that changes things...).
