Deker 3,478
Is life strange or what, I've been having an absolute mare in the fox department on the last 6 nights out after Charlie. Last night was night 7. Now for the last 10-14 days I've had my brothers Digital camera with me in the motor and got Nothing, car was in for service yesterday, took out all the valuable stuff and as bro collected me from the garage I gave him his camera back. Out last night with mate Steve and 2 foxes! Back at the motor at the end of the night I'm spouting off how typical it is to get some Charlie now, as I have no camera (I'm poor you see)....to which he replies he has one on his phone. So its back out to the field, one retrieved, the other too imbedded in the brambles...this girl taken at about 90 yards, the exit hole the other side gets an X certificate, the other about 140yards, both Vixen!! Guest JohnGalway
Good going Deker I was between .223 rifles at the end of last August I think it was, so I said I'd head out on a moonlit calm night, with the .22 More for a look out than anything. But, I saw seven foxes that night, none in range Foxes just seem to know sometimes Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Nice Shooting Deker what rifle/calibre are you using? thanks ss06 The girls last night met their Waterloo with my Tikka T3 Lite, 55g HP .223, although as John mentioned above I too often use the .22. The .22 is far better suited for smaller permissions or around the barns, stables, chickens etc! Recently been having a serious debate with a mange fox that has taken up residence in a hay loft and given the owners dog Fox mange. Small calibre, close range, confined conditions, top tool Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
I guess the .22 for fox debate will go on Quote Link to post
garyw 0
DEKER your right about the 22 r.f for close range work or confined spaces till you miss and the 22 slug goes pinging off all over ! no 1 rule dont miss. Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Number 2 ...... Have a look on your license as it wont say fox next to .22 Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
Good going Deker, were these the 'charmed' foxes or were you out somewhere else? Foxdropper - Deker managed it apparently... But in any other case, foxes are vermin so since my certificate says vermin and ground game, that'll do me. I think the idea behind a separate condition is to make sure people aren't buying a 22 specifically for foxes. They definitely do the job up close, and if anyone ever took my to court for shooting one with a 22LR, I think it's fair to say I know who'd win! Edit... And I need to get back out after foxy - everyone's shooting them today/last night... Edited February 23, 2008 by Mr_Logic Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Number 2 ......Have a look on your license as it wont say fox next to .22 Seems they have more faith in my ability than some, I can shoot foxes with my .22LR and anything from mice to deer with with my .223, that's what my cert says!!!. But my people think the .308 is too much gun for the fox, funny old world isn't it! Edited February 23, 2008 by Deker Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
Rule number 3. I live in the Republic of Ireland Just a general observation which I've seen all over this site lately is folks jumping to conclusions. That's totally not aimed at anyone in this thread, just a general observation like I say. Probably do it myself at times anyway better to ask folks things first than make an ass out of you and me as they say Quote Link to post

The charmed ones are on the sheep farm and await another night! Perhaps tomorrow! Quote Link to post

Look..calm down everyone..we seem to be wondering a bit your right about the 22 r.f for close range work or confined spaces till you miss and the 22 slug goes pinging off all over ! ??? I'm a bit lost ..are you suggesting a missed or even hit shot with a centrefire would be better in THESE circumstances??? Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
I once fired a Barnet 'Wildcat' crossbow with a pull of 120 Ilbs inside a normal sized room. I fired at a courderoy jacket hanging on the door. The bolt was rubber headed on a fibre glass shaft. Only, on impact, the shaft came straight through the rubber knob. That bolt then proceeded to do lots and Lots of completely erratic circuits of the room. Richochetteing from wall to wall and through space faster than the eye could follow. I just crouched there, in stark horror at what I'd done. Holding my breath as I prepared to die horribly. Whilst everything else I couldn't hold sort of squirted, hotly, down my thighs. It was quite the experience Quote Link to post

garyw 0
DEKER.low velocity rounds ie:22rf short cb:s etc only deform at low velocity when they strike/make contact with a solid object they do not disintergrate.on the other end of the scale high velocity rounds of the type v-max and the like will disintergrate when hitting a solid object .this is what they are desinged for.i have a 17 rem that i shoot nothing but 20 v-max through it, its chronographed at 4350 fps when this even hits grass it breaks up into small fragments that are less destructive because they lose velocity so quickly.i use this combination for foxes because a lot of the land i shoot on is surrounded by houses and if i were to miss [which i do]then i know with a backstop these tiny bullets are not going to end up in someones living room wall. iv no doubt all the folks on this site who own 22rf have shot charlie on more than one occasion with it but i wouldnt choose it as my no1 for mr c. its down to the person pulling the trigger to decide if its logical to use the 22rf before any other calibre,if you dont use it then you reduce the chances by a big margin of doing something you may regret.losing your f.a.c and maybe your freedom will i hope make folk think twice. i aint trying to teach grandma to suck eggs here just putting a sensible opinion forward .its good we all have an opinion . discuss!
