alright? had my new dog spud (3/4 whippet x 1/4 bull) for a few weeks now and i was told when i got him he is a lazy jumper i.e would rather go under or around the object, at the time i thought its ok as he is not huge so could just pick him up, but when i am out with the lamp by myself its a bit of a fook on.. :wallbash: he can jump and has done it a few times but not when i need him to lol, any advice would be great

Manda, you don't mention how old Spud is?

I gather you have bought him on 'doin a bit'?

Only advice I would give is, go back to jump training with him, start on real small stuff (just a hop over) and always lots of praise.....Make jumping fun for him and don't over train (time) or over match him (hight) on any one training session.

Best of luck

thats all what i do hpool_hunter just walk off and they will jump over

Its alright doing that when your out in the day and leave them in a kid play ground or somewhere they have to jump, but if the dogs anything like mine; if theres a way with out jumping thats the way she wil go, no matter how hard to find. She can jump, she just doesnt .. but shes getting better .. we will get there eventually.

hello manda as you may already know one of my dogs has an old injury due to jumping and that now restricts his runs on the lamp.... it sounds a sensible dog if it does everything else required of it but refuses to jump its a small sacrifice and incovenient but if hes finding other routes it might be something you could live with jus my opinion maybe i was unlucky all the best

Thats exactly the same as spud, but its all good walking away and leaving them to jump but when there is a pair of eyes the other side of the fence its a bit crap when you have to make more noise than you need to lifting them over lol

Use a command that means jump. I use 'ups' this relates to anytime i want my dog to jump on or over anything, a fence, on the bed, into the car etc etc

it takes 35 repetitions for a dog to properly learn something. just keep on with it, giving treats and a stroke when succesfull and a firm 'no' when naughty.

I started off on the lead pulling him through a fence and then eventually he associates the command with the action and does it himself. my other dog, she will jump a 5ft fence without a second thought when told to!!

Good luck!

just take it slowly it may have been hung up as a pup & have a lack of confidence, ifyou can get afew batton sscrew them to the run doorway or gateposts so everytime it goes in or out it has to jump & your there giving the command & praise as it does so, start low & add another batton every couple of days it wont take long & it will forget any bad association

hope this helps Pritch
