how old till you run a dog

Recommended Posts

no one can tell you hold old to run your dog some say ayear some will start sooner at 9 months. but at the end of the day you will know when he ready and only you. as for training theres plenty of topics on this website to help you and if you have aproblem tell us on here and someone will know what to do. as your dogs only 3 months he would be aperfect age to start next season while doing the training in the summer months.

good luck with him

I was told by an older bloke round here who's had working lurchers forever (according to him anyway), that you should wait till about a year, but longer with some of the larger ones so's not to do them any harm while they're bones are still growing etc? Made sense to me.

The dog will tell you if you have a close enough bond with it. i normaly find its depending on the breed as some take longer to mature. I once had a whippet x grey that was catching good numbers at 10 month then the same time i had a deerhound x that didnt start serous rabbiting untill it was 15 months but i wouldnt encourage any lurcher to course before its 8 months plus and over 15 months if its charlie and only then if its ready

at 12 weeks you shouldnt even be concerned about running the dog. just feed it, water it , love it andintroduce it to as many sights and sounds of the countryside as you can... THEN teach it the basic commands and behaviour you want. ive made sure that my dog is a steady ferreter and retreives objects well, and at 9 months shea ran her first 2 bunnys and been very unlucky., i know shes ready and you will too. good luck with it..
