Hello lads and ladies,

i have a bit of a problem with a lurcher pup,the thing is she was off her food last week for a day or so and i brought her to the vet,he told me she had a kidney infection,he gave her a injection of antibiotics and said she should be grand in a week or so,now for the past couple of days she is scouring like mad, anything she eats comes out like a power hose,so i have decided to starve her for 24 hours and wait to see if i can clear her of this, she is being fed on cooked meat most of the time and she gets calf replacement milk with weetabix and cornflakes every morning and a couple of eggs twice a week, she is 11 weeks old and has gone a bit thin but she is still full of life, playing with the other pups she is with, have any of you ever had this with any pups and what have you done to cure it,...........thanks lads and ladies in advance..........Billy.

Hope your pup gets better soon. Antibiotics can upset the system for a bit. What is your pups typical daily diet? When my bitch was a pup she often had the scoots - experience showed that she was intolerant to milk and wheat type cereals - she still is, i can't supplement her diet with these even now or it's back to the same old runny stuff - complete with blood - yuk!. i cut them out and she started to do solid waste and put on a bit of condition. I may be worth feeding her a bland, consistent diet, especially without the milk?

Chicken , white fish , both boiled , rice , bland diet , no cereal , plenty of water cause if shes got the runs she might dehydrayte a little give it 24 hours on this type of diet , but if you want for your own peace of mind give the vet a ring . My old stafford would eat a lb of tripe in about 30 seconds , he never , ever ,left any food , but the bitch i have now will go and sit by the bowl , take a little bit , chew it up and swallow it while she has a wander round , takes her about 10 mins to eat half the food he would ! When i first got her i drove me mad with worry that she was off her food ( she was`nt i just thought she was cause she was slow ) kept an eye on what she liked and what she did`nt ,lamb gives her the runs , she has chicken and rice , and tripe sometimes , but also a kibble . If she has some thing new shes out side with it for half an hour  dont worry about it you will get used to each other and it may just be that something does`nt suit her .

Guest little lurcher

try also a couple of teaspoons of live natural yoghurt to aid her digestion, will help the gut flora, 1 or 2 teaspoons twice daily should help , also plain boiled chicken and rice , very bland but will help

good luck with pup

Just wondering, has she recently had her vaccinations??? Many dogs go off their food with or without loose bowels after vaccinations.

I wouldn’t give her weetabix, cereal acts like a laxative and could make the problem worse.

Antibiotics is known for causing diarrhea so that could be a factor.

Best food for dogs with unset stomachs is, rice and chicken.

Pup's shouldn't be starved at all, they need regular meals to maintain weight. Make sure she has plenty of fresh water available throughout the day

hope this helps
