Guest Ditch_Shitter
Thats all well and good, i would love to use smaller stores but as i work 6.30am - 4.30pm and spend the weekends with the dogs and OH the only thing open is the evil faceless supermarket! Aye. People work here too. Only, now ye mention it, our local food shops don't shut till 20:00 or so and, on friday, nor do the butchers. In fact, we're so civilised here we even have shops that double up as pubs! " Just popping out for a *Cough!* tin of beans, dear ....! ". Hence I was once able to stagger out of the back room, at midnight, into the shop. Pick up a cabbage and fall straight into the waiting taxi outside! See? Civilised! Guest little lurcher
on reading this ive sen how much ive cut down on big store shopping and thats probably why i can manage with 2 kids and 12 dogs on income support!!! i have a butcher about 5 miles away ( not my nearest but you will see why) he does me chicken frames at 24p lb dog mince at less than 20p and i get a huge mixed bag of hearts and liver at £3, i get my red mills for the dogs near to him at £10 a bag , i use 2 a month and now up to 4 as my dad is using it for his terriers and whippets also, the butcher sells local produce veg in season and i get a box of the wilted stuff for free and a couple of boxes of meaty bones which i freeze down, im running 3 freezers 2 for animals 1 for us , he has to pay to clear the waste , im taking that for free as well as my dogs get good quality meat and veg, when i have a few spare rabits i give them to him for himself and often get a oddment extra bag of feed free, my total feed bill if not catching anything , is less than £50 a month thats including the red mills , all 12 of mine are in tip top condition and im often commented on their coats and muscle tone, also the cats and the ferrets eat the meat we personally eat 3 roast dinners a weeks all with fresh veg, a couple of if it dinners and usually a stew some where in there too , rather than processed crap ! for odds and sods cleaning stuff sauces etc although i often pop across the shop , but by doing that i only buy what i need that day, i still use a milkman even though the shop is cheaper, i persoanlly feel use it or lose it? i urge anyone to pay that little extra to support local producers, if we all done the same then the supermarkets wouldt have as much hold and farmers could earn a decent living however i do use tescos and primark for cheap clothing, with 2 sons , its hard work keeping them in decent clothes and you cant beat the prices
Tis TM 8
We had loads of problems trying to find good farm shops. They're a complete rip off % of the time. We'll settle for a greengrocer that sell seasonal British produce, local if possible. There's one in Perranporth and a reasonable farm shop that grow their own near Hayle. We got our new polytunnel yesterday, so it looks like the weekend's gonna be busy! We also rear our own Chooks for eggs and the table as well as a turkey and a couple of geese. (chicks and goslings available soon!) We have also just got a couple of porkers to try. It doesn't matter if you stop using supermarkets all together, or just make a point of buying just one item locally (we started with eggs, before we got our chooks), if enough people do it, it will make a difference! And to those who don't care about our countryside and the people who look after it for us, fair enough, but I thought that out of anyone, the people on this site would've had a vested interest! I'm just outside St. Austell Elmer, do you live local then?.... I must have a good scout around.... The other thing I want to look into is a wind turbine.... It blows a hoolie up on the ridge that we live on, and I'm sick of the electric bills we're getting In fact, we're so civilised here we even have shops that double up as pubs! I wish I could go shopping and come home in the state you do

My wife keeps on about a wind turbine, but until they get simpler and cheaper, it's just out of reach for us.

I had a feeling they might be a bit pricey, although I hadn't actively looked into it yet, ... not really the sort of thing you come across second hand yet either...... I guess its the whole set up, ie: wiring and converter that adds up......
