Incubating

Jasper, does the temprature change from species to species? I always thought it was blood temprature  slight variation in humidity levels from varying species though

Computer fans and diy etc sounds like a recipe for disaster, but who am i to argue, please let us all know how you get on with your venture, i would be most interested! :victory:

Its a strange one TBF :hmm:. Most of the Bird Of Prey have a optimum Temperature of 99.5F/37.5C, the Grumbach ticks over nice in the Incubator room just under this around 37.2 - 3 which I feel happy with and the Hatch rate. Temperature/Humidity/Turning all play a big part in the Hatching of eggs! some eggs are also much more temperamental than other's and need to be weighed such as some of the BOP eggs.

If I'm weighing eggs you take the birds fresh egg weight and aim somehwere for a loss of around 15% to pip, but 13% suits me fine, basically a egg needs to loose fluid to hatch which is effected my Humidity! too much and the egg won;t lose enough! to little and the egg loses too much and start to fry out, you can end up with chicks dead in a shell in both cases, on top of all this you will need to turn the eggs and keep the Temperature pretty stable, if a egg for one reason or another like say it is thick shelled isn't loseing enough weight, you can put a hole in the airsac end to help it dry out, if it still isn't loseing enough open it up a bit more until it comes back on weight, you can then litteraly just put tape over the hole once the adjustment is made, sounds a bit gory and it looks it sometimes in the Incubator but it works...

Personally for Foul or Game I wouldn't worry too much about any of this, I also wouldn'nt be adding any water to a Incubator for these eggs either unless it has a fan like a Microlight :whistling:, there is enough Humidity in this country and alot of the time too much to worry about adding water. there is still alot of disagreements about Optimum Temperature on some eggs, I was speaking to a keeper a few years back who had his best ever hatch and has kept to it at 99.8F, I have also heard of some more extreme than this but wouldn't recommend it mate, 99.5F/37.5C and you won't be far out on most...

At the end of the day the best Incubators are the birds themselves! in the long run they get them off better than Incubators, I like to give all my BOP eggs some Natural Incubation before placing them in a Inc unless like above I take them from fresh, this year I'm trying some Silkie Bantams in Arc's which proved to me when they went Broody last year how well they would sit! I'm having a trial run this year with a few slected eggs to see quite how well they do before finishing them off in the Inc ....
