Guest tina/kev/sky/ace/tug
I keep reading on this forum about the fens and how you need a special dog to have any sucsess there. Iv never been but what i understand it a big open area with loads of haresNow iv been thinking about this and beleave that as long as your dog has a good bit of stamina it going to do well. Now would these dogs do as good in the fields where most of us hunt on where the hare can excape through fences bushes ect and need to pull off these amazing turns they do. what you all think? poacher2225 2
i think you are right if you watch the film's most of the run's the dog's dont even git on them untill thay go 2 or 3 fild's and around little fild's the dog's have got to have some speed cos if the hare git's of the first fild 9 times out of 10 he's free and out of sight and in some wood's Quote Link to post
pritch 335
simple no they would'nt some runs last 5 or more mins most dogs dont get half that time before a hare is lost but thats why we all have different sizes & types of dog dependent on type of quarry & land we run. suluki 2
IMO it is all down to what type of dog it is! if its a fen plodder then no its not going to kill hares in small field but some fen dogs have been bred with speed as well as stay and they would quite easly kill in the smalest of fields! a mate of mine pre ban had a dog out of caspa that i watched run a hare for 7mins on the fen and i also saw the same dog kill 2/2 hares lockal to me in very small fields! so some wouuld and some wouldnt????? jpt 284
good question i have thought the same thing. when out in the smaller fields they seem very hard to catch and usually burn rubber off into the next field or hedges etc. are they easier to catch in bigger fields? lurcherchavvy 3
you get some very big fields with fields surrounding and only hedges in the way and as long as the dog is on it.....it can carry on until the next field.....but sometimes you have one quite big field put up a hare and the dog has to be quick to make sure it dont get out that one field oterwise its run over....if you have a fenn dog which is quite slow getting to them they wont have the room but you watch some of the dvds filmed on the fenns and some of them fenn dogs are quick Quote Link to post

whin 463
well after chaseing hares down south and in scotland small feilds big feilds , up here at this time of year a good dog will kill 2 out of maybe four runs single handed in east lothain , the same dog if its got stamina it will kill hares on the fens to, not fives but 2 out of three or three out of three if good and lucky enough, up here we have woods ,hares not far enough out or spooked by lamping , hide in the woods all day, so not so many out , the fen hare isnt diffrent for any other hare maybe pursued more, a wise man says to me and a freind years ago our dogs would not do what you do with your dogs when we were killing large qauntities of game at nite and running daylight hares , i got a dog out of s vickers jadex sniper he done both and one other, the rest ,well were bred for up here only a fool would by a dog thats bred for the fens on big land were they need grinding stamina to run in small feilds a bit of day light hunting and a bit of nite time hunting Quote Link to post
whin 463
i realise d years ago the best fen dogs were not suited localy for the type of hunting i do, but you do get pups out of these lines that are racy enough and can run in other parts of the country but you take your chance , ive always stipulated to most people by the dog or breed the dog that suits your area you hunt no piont in buying a dog that was bred to hunt the great plains if you only het the odd hare in asmall feilds a saluki grew bred right would be more suited Quote Link to post
