Andrea 2
To be honest, i think that if you want your dog to live outdoors, it should be introduced to the run from the beginning. The older they get, the harder it becomes Personally, i would give it a try, but i think he may kick up merry hell. At least for a week or so. I would start with putting him in for an hour during the day, then try for an hour or so in the late evening, gradually increasing the amount of time over a week or more. Thats what i would do, but others may have a different technique. Good luck Quote Link to post

Good luck sounds about right andrea, your cocker is still young , as stated that you are going to get a bit of hassle with barking and crying, maybe i idea to inform the neighbours, i feel its better to have a working dog outside as they become use to the cold weather, and the last thing you want is going out 5am on a cold winters morning and have your cocker looking up at you shaking with cold at your feet, even before they had a retieve from water i would start feeding her only inside the kennel, and before long she will run to the kennel when you have her feeding bowl in your hand. good luck, Quote Link to post
leegreen 2,170
Wrong time of year to be introducing a pup to an outside kennel, unless with another dog. If a pup is not used to it, it will create. you could always get some type of heater, infra-red etc. The best way to do it would be to put it out in the summer and let it acclimatise as the seasons get colder and even this sould be done bit by bit. At least if it keeps howling you can(after telling it to shut up a few times) chuck a cup of cold water at it, this has worked for me. You cant do the water thing in the winter. Quote Link to post
pipcock 21
thanks everyone, still in two minds, but the older she gets ,like you said the harder it will be. theres no problem for lighting and heating. im just abit worried about the dog not settling in and the 300 to 500 quid layout for the kennel. got to have a good think about this one. confused 1
She will settle, start her off when you around ,then you can check her if it gets noisy, then she will soon get the drift, and realise that you have not run away, i've never had one that did'nt settle, and that includes some a lot older than 4/5 month. Shamo 319
Every Pup I have comes into the House for a Month or two BEFORE going into a Kennel. When it comes to introducing them to Kennels I do it by putting them in for an hour or two a day during daylight hours, increasing as time goes and eventually bringing them into the House very last thing at night before my bedtime. As they get better and more accustomed I leave them overnight. In time they become fully Kennel trained, usually within two Weeks or so(invest in a water Pistol..... ). You get a well socialised Puppy and able to live in or out....my experience anyway. Quote Link to post
