How much more accurate is a heavy barrel?

Recommended Posts

I'm deciding which rifle to get in 223 to replace my 22-250 for foxing and target work. I've been set on a heavy barrel thus far, my Sako is and it's lovely.

However, I can't afford that kind of money again, so the next one will be Tikka/CZ etc. In a Tikka, you don't get heavy barrel with laminate or wood, just icky plastic. I'll have a plastic stock if I have to, but I like wood of some variety.

So I thought, what about the Hunter? That's wood but has a light barrel. So, how much do I lose out on by getting a lighter barrel, given my intended use above? Cheers muchly :)

The accuracy between the heavy and light barrel is nil until you head to the range, and start firing 5 shot groups, it then depends on how long you let the barrel cool, the heavy barrel will take more rounds in sucession than the light barrel, but for foxing there will be no difference,

So unless you want to dedicate to range work the light barrel will do fine.

you could fire maybe 3 five shot groups before stringing occurs ( a widening in the group either horizontal or vertical)

whereas the light barrel may shoot 2 five shot groups before heating and leading to stringing on the third 5 shot group......

Logic, why are you going from .22/250 to .223? :hmm:

Money, really. My Sako 75 Varmint is a lovely rifle, but at a quid a bang it costs a fortune. I also can't shoot targets with it because it's such a quick calibre. I can't reload because I live in the tiniest shoebox known to man, and I don't have any space for all the bits.

I want something to do targets and foxes, can't justify a rifle for each - don't shoot enough foxes or targets to warrant it.

Tbh, I haven't decided for 100% that the Sako is going, just that I will get a 223. Thing is, I can't see the point in 22-250 when I have 223, because the extra hundred yards I get don't matter in dear old Berkshire.

I am also going to ask for a 243, which will have a large bearing on the future of the 22-250. if I get 243 for fox and the occasional deer, then it covers the 22-250 base (i.e. goes a bloody long way) better anyway, and is deer-legal.

Gary - how would that work with a Sako? I see trouble because the action is a different size, magazine size is different etc - I know nothing about it, is there a way round that?

I had a CZ 527 in .223, couldn't hit a garage door from 20 feet, looked OK, but was rubbish, the CZ rimfires are the 'dogs but centrefires I don't think so.

I started reloading when I had the .223 so maybe I was a bit 'rough' here and there but I've been tainted.

My mate has a 22.250 Savage BVSS it is really super accurate, so recomended, but it weighs 8,5lbs before you put a scope and moddy on, so if you fancy it get down the gym or hire a bearer.

My CZ 17hmr 16" carbine is unbelievable, this afternoon I shot a rabbit from 194 Yards (Laser Measured) I just held off one bar on the Varmint Ret ladder and 'Buff' it rolled over and didn't even twitch. My .22lr wouldn't even ruffle his hair from that far.

If only brno would sort the triggers out they would wipe out the opposition.

I have an Eric Brooks trigger kit on the above .17, if you have a CZ 452 get one from the states $30 (=£15.00) it isn't an Anschutz or a Sako but neither does it cost £600>£800.

Good Shooting!
