Any fly fishing experts on here?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My dads coming over to ireland from the states to visit and to do a bit of fishing in march. I have a nice new rod and reel but no flies yet. I want to get some leaders and flies ready for him but am not an expert.

I live beside a nice wee river with rainbows, browns and sea trout. Its only about 10 yards wide though and the fish are easily spooked when its calm. Theres a few nice pools in it. Also im near the mouth of the river and at high tide the water level goes way up. Usually you have to fish at high tide or with a bit of a flood in it. Its been years since ive fished properly though and id like some pointers, I think that maybe small salmon shrimp flies are the best bet, we've usually only used wet flies. Im thinking that since we're a bit rusty maybe it would be good to try two or three on the leader at first? I think ive all ready saw a mayfly down there.

So i guess im wondering what flies to try and if i should use more than one on the leader?

Also whats the best times and conditions for a river like this?

Any advice appreciated.

if you go for the rainbows and brown's use a little pheasent tail nymph or a hear's ear, i would think best with a gold head on or maybe try some little cdc's on the surface and float them over fish you can see or even because it is still early in the season maybe use a bloodworm pattern fished under a bung(sightbob)

hope this help
