ive recently taken a rescue colly X greyhound X bull he is 6 months, ive had him for 6 weeks now and doing well with the basics but im really confussed he will retrieve perfect in the garden( i use a dummy coverd in a bunnie pelt) but when we go out for a walk or go ferreting he is not intersted in it at all and doesnt seem to be too intersted in the bunnies we bolt in to the long net for him to see .

not sure what im doing wrong or is it normal ???

i do he was locked in a cage all day and night and allowed to come in the house for an hour a day and he shit in the house every time but she only ever fed him brown bread nothing else he was not beaten for any thing else it was just that he crapped in the house when he was let in ....

being your first dog a listening to people!! your head is mushy pea lad take step back and enjoy him as a pup things will come right for you some dogs are slow starters and its just the fact hes pup an havent a clue yet time time all in good time

the dog is way to young let him get used to you frist leave him till 11 mouths before you bring him hunting again to many dogs wrecked by been brought out to eorlier

Imagine what a child would be like if it had only ever been shut in a cage, never went to school, never played or went out: the same is true of dogs. He will be retarded in just about everything he does. Instead of treating him like the pup of 6 months that he is, treat him more like a pup of 8 to 12 weeks, because that is what he is mentally.

He has been deprived of all the stimulation that normal dog owners do as a matter of course: taking the pup out in the fields, playing with it, getting it used to the big wide world and life in general.

I've taken on pups that have been deprived in a similar way to yours, and it is safe to say that they often take up to 6 months to catch up with a pup that has been properly reared.

If he's retrieving balls in the garden that is a really good start and he's coming on well: just be very patient, give him loads of time and get him out and about as much as you can: try hiding dummies for him in a clump of grass when your'e out and get him to find them, though you'll probably have to show him what to do to begin with. that will be the start of his hunting. Leave the real bunnies alone for the moment and let him catch up on what he missed out on at the start of his life.

Wouldn't even show him rabbits at that age. Concentrate on the training but don't go overboard. Like others have said, let him be a pup.

IF HE WAS INTRESTED AT THAT AGE AND GAVE CHASE HE WOULD MORE THAN LIKELY OPEN UP WITH FRUSTRATION. SO I WOULD KEEP HIM UP TILL NEXT SEASON NOW .AT 13 OR 14 MONTHS OLD HE SHUD BE SPOT ON. ALL THE BEST WITH HIM MATE.
