Retrieving advice

Recommended Posts

OK, Tyla has started to kill rabbits which is great but how to make her retrieve?

i have tried lots of things ever since she was a pup, but no joy. i used to train gundogs so i thought this would be the easy part :icon_redface: She used to do it to a degree but since aquiring her prey drive she seems to have forgotten it. i have no doubt its my fault as i have been so focused on other parts of her training i have let it slide. She is also very easily discouraged and so i didnt want her associating rabbits with getting confused and spazzing out

She is desperate to please but a bit neurotic so if she dosent understand she gets all upset and becomes impossible. Everything else is great recall, sit, stay, wait, jump etc but those are all things that she did naturally so it was easy to funnel her into doing them on command. Carrying things in her mouth does not seem to come naturally to her so im struggling with it.

Any ideas apprieciated

Tyla what does she do when she catches a rabbit?

She carries it a little way, in any direction, head up all proud then holds it on the ground and waits for me to come and get it. She dosent kill them but holds tight til told to "leave".

At least she's keeping a hold of the rabbit which gives you something to work with.Have you tried walking away from her after she's caught a rabbit? Or crouching down and encouraging her to come in to you?

i had a bit of a break through today. She caught a mixy one in the daylight and i used it as a dummy, she ran off with it but eventually brought it almost to me. i repeated it until she was getting bored but i hope its progress? Shes awkward, refuses to go after a dummy and gets all neurotic if forced so this was a good opportunity.

Don't walk to her! As soon as she makes her catch call her then start walking away from her. Even if you have to keep walking around the same field wait for her to come to you - she will eventually. Whatever you do don't walk towards her - at the moment she's training you ;)
