Rainmaker 7
hi does any one feed there dogs tripe and if so would you feed a puppy it and how much tripe is 70 % water and low in protein not to good for pup which need high protein. I see this said quite a bit, but it's rather misleading. Tripe is 70% to % water, yes. Just the same as every other piece of whole raw meat, or whole animal on the planet - you and your dogs included. That's not a dig at you personally mate, I just read it a lot on here and there's no justification for it. I've yet to see someone post that you shouldn't bother feeding raw, because it's 70% to % water (and it is!)... Here's the typical analysis from a pack of Prize Choice tripe chunks (chopped pieces of whole raw green tripe): Typical Analysis Protein 13%, oil 12%, moisture 72% When we look at that tripe on a dry matter basis (the only objective comparison) it actually looks more like this: Protein: 46% Fat: 42.8% That most certainly is NOT a low protein food. Don't let the high water content fool you, as it's irrelevant until you compare it on a dry matter basis. In actual fact, tripe is higher in protein than any complete food on the market! Tripe also has an almost perfect calcium : phosphorous ratio, and if not processed contains probiotic bacteria and other goodness. Although not ideal, dogs can (and do) live on almost nothing but tripe. As a supplement to the diet, it's not a bad choice. EDIT: By the way, for future reference for anyone who's interested... To compare the nutrient levels between various foods (raw, canned, dry, whatever) you convert to a dry matter basis using this formula: (percentage of the nutrient) / (percentage of DRY matter, which is 100 - moisture content) = dry matter content. So above, we have 72% moisture listed. So 100 - 72 = 28% dry matter. 13 (percent protein) / 0.28 (which is how you write 28% on a calculator) = 46% "true" protein content. I hope that's helpful. Many thanks for that superb piece of of genuinely useful information I have always included raw green tripe in my lurcher feeding regime,..but was acutely aware of this 70% water claim,..and have never relied upon the tripe for anything much else other than an additive to enhance the lamb ribs and chicken carcases. Really informative,...and so important....
Rainmaker 7
Happy to be of use as always mate. No need to feel guilty feeding tripe, it's good tucka!
bedrock 16
Tripe is 70% to % water, yes. Just the same as every other piece of whole raw meat, or whole animal on the planet - you and your dogs included. True beef has about a 70% water content and some chicken breast has even more . people always seem to be afraid to feed their dogs tripe and say that it is no good. As long as it is fed as part of a balanced diet it is top stuff.

Rainmaker 7
mix it with buiscuit nout wrong with it. Nice to see this thread finally getting some decent answers. Tripe is great food as I said. but worm your dog more often. and you can pick shit up with your hand LOL Does anyone else care to admit to using "white dog poo" as pavement chalk when they were kids? I know me and my mates used to...
