Guest HARE
Hi, im new here, learning all the time and their seems to be lots to take in here. Just wonderd about veg? I have allways fed whole rabbits, hares, chicken, ect, raw meat mainly, in the past and red mills. I have never fed veg much, just from table scraps. Is veg, very important in a lurchers deit? Thanks. fruite and veg is important as you get the correct balance of vitamins that you wouldnt get from a meat only diet ... i use 2 fruite and 3 veg in my dogs meal ... her is a list of fruite anbd veg ... hope this helps .......... Good Veggies' & Fruits to Feed (Foods you can feel good about feeding. Add lots of green leafy vegetables) Courgettes- Romaine (COS) Lettuce - High nutritional value Ice Berg Lettuce - has no nutritional value but is OK to feed. You can use as a filler. Tomatoes (avoid the leaves and stems) - Carrots - These are high in sugars so be careful Celery - Not much nutritional value but is a good diuretic. Bok Choy - Parsley- Oranges - Apples (not the seeds) - peas- Bananas - Alfalpha Sprouts - Bell Peppers (Capsicum) - red, green and yellow Fresh Pumpkin (not the canned pie filling) - Silver Beat - Beet Root - Kale - Cilantro - Mustard Greens - Dandelions - Marrow- Yams - Sweet Potatoes - Asparagus - Jicama (remove skin) - Parsnip - Turnips - Sprouts - Caution Veggies' & Fruits (Foods you can feed but with cautions) Garlic - fed in small amounts is very beneficial for your dog. It is considered natures antibiotic. However, to much can cause anemia and upset stomach. So when making your veggie mix, use 1-3 cloves but no more. Grapes / raisins- (in high amounts) Dogs exhibit gastrointestinal problems, including vomiting and diarrhea and then signs of kidney failure with an onset of severe kidney signs starting about 24 hours after ingestion of the grapes or raisins. Eggplant - OK to feed the fruit but avoid any other parts. They can cause upset stomach, drooling, lethargy, heart failure Avocados (& leaves) - Stay away from the leaves. The fruit part is OK to feed in small amounts. Spinach, Swiss Chard, and Rhubarb - OK in small amounts. While these are not toxic, they are high in oxalic acid, a compound that interferes with calcium absorption, so don't feed these very often. Cabbage/Broccoli/Cauliflower - OK to feed in small amounts but may cause gas. If fed frequently and in large amounts these will depress the thyroid. Potatoes – Cautions: If your dog is diabetic or has arthritis and has/had cancer then you may want to stay away from underground veggies because they convert to starch/sugar which aggravates arthritis. Cancer cells also thrive on sugars. Bad Veggies' & Fruits (Foods to be avoided all together) Onions & (onion powder) - upset stomach, and can cause Heinz body anemia. Thanks very much for that Socks. I will print it and keep it for the future. Quote Link to post

the keeper 0
This is the first time I've fed a pup on raw diet. When I got the grey, as an adult, I switched her onto it and my other lurcher ate it as well. Stella is nearly 15 weeks old now. Yesterday she ate 1lb of tripe at breakfast, two chicken wings mid day, copious training treats throughout the day, 1lb of beef mince for tea and a tripe stick She does get quite a bit of exercise; lots of running round in the garden and field - sometimes over an hour at a time, plus at least one road walk about 30 mins. I don't push her if she's tired, I basically follow her lead for how much exercise she wants. But should I be feeding more/less? I feed my lurcher on wag worker + cod liver oil, the oil helps growth on muscle and bones and keeps the coat looking good, dry food helps teeth develope and gives a strong jaw, I have fed my dogs this way for years. Fair enough, we all feed differently, but IMO that dry food is not worth the bag it comes in....And dry food does not help teeth develop at all, Bones do, flaked cereal kibble will not improve teeth, dont believe the advertising.... lurchergrrl 1,441
Whatever works for you mate, but I think wag is probably one of the worst dry foods on the market. I fed it to one of my dogs ages ago - he produced so much wind from it I considered putting a windmill in my garden Coat went dry, and his crap was enormous and rank. Bones are what gives a dog strong teeth. Cereal based food sticks in between their teeth and contributes to rot. Pup is doing VERY well. I let her eat as much as she wants; some days it's more than others. She's been out mooching with me this morning, spent loads of energy so when she's rested for a couple of hours I'll let her have a bit extra till her next meal. I've kept to the raw meat, bones and fish and I'm really pleased with it. She's not over keen on veg but she'll eat it, and she quite likes bananas. She looks good if you ask me, but then I suppose I'm a bit biased Quote Link to post
Guest smashygadge
well as for dry food it has its benifits my dogs do well on it but i mix with raw meat as the complete has all nessasary protien vitamins etc in my pup i gave him mainly dry and a bit of raw maybe a rabbit as a treat now and again. as feeding raw all time from a pup to me u are looking for trouble in getting the dog to retreive and bring quarry back to hand but thats my opinion ,my dog has grown like a horse and feel complete has benifits as well as raw. raw to me only improves their stools ofwhich u wont get as much. Guest reload
Raw wont stop a dog retrieving game Its nothing to do with food at all. I have always raised pups on a 100% raw diet, and they do far better IMO, grow better bone and have better health. The minerals and proteins are not just in complete feeds, thats a load of rot, like I say dont believe the advertising. What do you thionk dogs did before dry food?? Naturally occuring vitamins and minerals are by far superior to the man made you get in complete. If you want to see the proof in the pudding........Try it you WILL see the differnce Quote Link to post
