I posted this on the Trump thread. I get confused.

Terriers were called curs before they were called terriers ,hence the phrase to cur tail when you had to pay taxes on dogs except small dogs and to show this they cut the tails off them and the habit

The clue is in the name of the type “terrier” Old Latin (terra) for earth. Terriers were originally bred as ground dogs as in mainly underground, if not first and foremost.

Edited to add; I could be wrong but I think the full word “terrier” came from old French, which would be a derivative of the Latin terra.

Gunter man you’re definitely a keyboard warrior, I was just having a conversation I’ve kept patterdales and Russell’s for years and I know what they do.

A man that doesn’t want to learn is a fool. I don’t know why you’re trying to argue. We were talking about the Russell you ask where he got it and I answered and I said to read a book. There’s nothing wrong with that. Then you started crying?

Terriers were called curs before they were called terriers ,hence the phrase to cur tail when you had to pay taxes on dogs except small dogs and to show this they cut the tails off them and the habit of docking small dogs has stuck. Latin came along when  christianity spread.as that's the written language they used and there were small dogs used for hunting and vermin control way before then..

Gotta disagree with the Latin bit mate. Latin came with the Romans, not Christianity. That came much later (250-300 years) after Theodosius made it the official religion of the Roman Empire in the late 300’s (Constantine was the first Christian emperor early 300’s).

The cur tail bit, no idea. Something I’ll have a butchers into as boring shit like this interests me ;)

I have an English book on dogs, it's from 1700's and they reckon terriers were originally bred, way before then from beagles and mongrel mastiffs. Don't know how much truth there is to that.

Who wrote that AW …. Brian Plummer ? 😜

We all know Brian was the creator of terriers and the universe lol but I think the book was before his time. Does anyone know how terriers really originated?

The "first" terrier type dog is a bit of a broad question, as terriers evolved over time and weren't a single, defined breed. However, the origins of modern terriers can be traced back to the now-extinct Old English White Terrier and the Old English Black-and-tan Terrier that were common in England as early as the 1700s.

I don't know  but just my opinion there will always have  been dogs small medium large I guess it's the same now as it was back then you just bred to type if you look at russels there's all different types same as patterdales and stuff really all anyone does is breed to type I guess as soon as there were settlements and people kept stock they started trying to come up with something to kill pests The Black and Tan Terrier, sometimes called "Terrar", was a type of terrier referenced as far back as Tudor times.
