Best for preserving walking stick??

I do like danish oil but wanted a bit of a hard gloss finish so dug out some really old yacht varnish with all the nastys in it, you can still get similar on line just make sure you have to use spirit to clean your brush and not water and a long drying time of 24 hrs or so

I second yacht varnish or although I've not used it polyurethane looks easy to apply

The problem with using a varnish Is that moisture can and will over time get behind it and push the coating off  …. An oil is a protective barrier not a protective coating so cannot  deteriorate the same  way … oil every time …..unless it’s just astethetic .
