Thames Water thought they had the perfect Ponzi Scheme;

Interest rates were below 1% so they borrowed £billions to pay huge salaries to their directors and huge dividends to their investors, safe in the knowledge that income from water rates would cover the interest they had to pay on the loans.

Then came covid and Russias invasion of Ukraine; interest rates went above 6% and the water rates collected went nowhere near covering the interest , so Thames Water suddenly found themselves £Billions in debt and heading rapidly for bankruptcy.

The government asked the shareholders to provide a bridging loan  but they refused.
Now, there’s been a court case, the government won’t send in the receivers and nationalise it, but will provide the funds to keep it going and the water rates will rise by 100%, all paid for by the public, while the directors and the shareholders walk away Scott free…..

Nice for some, ehh ?

Cheers.

Interest rates were 0% when Geroge Osbourne embarked on austerity. Every seasoned political commentator,  from all sides of the spectrum, agreed that was the time to borrow money and let inflation pay off the debt. But the brave George, drawing from his experience as a shirt folder in Harrods, (his only job) decided otherwise and left us with substandard services from the roads to the NHS. But be not affeared, Rachel from accounts, with the dodgy CV, is continuing George's mission and has  punished the pensioners and the disabled. b*****ds that they are. It's obvious they are to blame for the country's books not balancing.

If you want an example of how people are screwed in England, you don't need to look further than water. Every drop of water is measured and has to be paid for. The only other country is the world where water has been fully privatised is Chile which is not exactly known for its generosity to its citizens or its human rights.

In return the water companies have presided over a system where NOT ONE river in England is now in  a good state of 'health'. The water companies have habitually poured raw sewage into rivers whilst paying themselves millions in bonuses. How f****n cynical is that?

i haven't had/nor paid for water in years, we have our own drilled well, the water is crystal clear and tastes way better than supplied water plus you don't get that horrible shot of chlorine when the pipes are cleaned.....if your live out in the country here you get a well....

Biggest regret not sorting private pension when I was young. Going to have to rely on state pension what ever that amounts to. Worked all my life. Too late to do any thing about it now. Bills rocketing. Won’t be long have to work a week to pay bloody council tax. On plus side if you got your health that’s a lot more than some. If I can get around and see these views. Got a roof and food on table that will do me

Same here mate though my pit pension that is only 400 pound a month that and the state pension and with being mortgage free it will be enough for me to live on. It's the freeloading politicians and those who doss in the house of Lords i curse every day who raised the state pension age as i would be retired in 9 months instead of another two years.

A mate and his Mrs are in the situation. Made them work another two years, plus confiscating the pension payment they would have got. Robbers the lot of them. They should all be required to work in tough jobs every so often to keep them in touch with the real world.

Like you say mate to keep them intouch with the real world that not many of them making these decisions will not have a clue about. I think most of us will have had the odd gripe about some taking the benefit system for a ride though the real gripe should be aimed at the politicians and councils and like terry said in the other post he wishes he had paid into a private pension easier said than done in my case with employment uncertainty years ago.

I’d say it will depend mostly on the area you live in and aim to work in pal, are you rural? Is there lots of moles about? If they are there and folk are willing to pay to have em removed then it’s easy enough to earn a decent wage, jist depends on the effort you’re willing to put in. Might be easier or wiser to do it song side summat else for a bit jist to see how it goes tho, send me a message tho if you wanna know anymore
