Have never used a top bar hive but did buy one in a sale years ago - just have never got around to using it. Without a far bit of knowledge & experience I would say keeping bees in this type of hive could be a right pain in the arse. If your beekeeping isn’t enjoyable then you’ll find it an uphill struggle. There’s pro’s and con’s to all the hive formats but beekeeping is hard enough as it is without looking for trouble. There’s a lot of marketeers & do gooders putting their pennies worth in which just makes things even more confusing to those who wish to give it a go.

You say not bothered about the honey just want bees, well if you can’t inspect them what’s the point of having bees? Might as well go find a tree in the woods & observe them there. Cambridge near to us is now a hot spot for European foul brood, they had a massive influx of new beekeepers and decease is now rife. All those with good intentions have caused a huge issue. This has also happened in London.

Before committing to a hive type try to see a few in the flesh so to speak - visit a few local beekeepers & see what they’re using. I really hope you find a top bar hive beekeeper near to you. Around this neck of the woods the majority use commercials or nationals in the various formats. If you’re using an obscure hive type then spare kit isn’t readily available and spare kit is something you will need.

Hope the course is enjoyable
