young1982 1
Just wanted some opinions on what would be a good grouping over 100 yards using .17 hmr. Me and the brother-in-law were doing some target practice in the garden at a distance of about 60 paces and we didn't know if the groupings we were getting were any good, below isa pic of the last target of the day lets us know what you think. Cheers all CZ 452 Varmint .17 hmr with a AGS 3-9x40 scope. .17 hrm Winchester 17gr. v-max Quote Link to post
TOMY,HMR 0
Hello mate. You should feel good about those groups mate ,i would be. It is possibe to get sub 1'' groups from the HMR round, but you need perfect conditions a rock steady rest and a very good trigger technique. Good grouping with the HMR relies on so many variables, wind, batch quality, fouling in the barrel, and lots more. But in my opinion 1-1 1/2'' is respectable at 100 yards. Some rifles such as the upper priced Anshutz rifles (1717 i think) are capable of 1/2'' groups al day long. But are you willing to pay almost £1000 pounds for it. Hope this helps and all the best. TOMY,HMR 0
Forgot to add that seeing that you are using a fairly low powerd scope, makes those groups even more impresive. Cheers Quote Link to post
dwighet 1
Mate I have a cz american 17 hmr and on a nice calm summer day it will shoot just under 1 inch with hornady vmax 17gr. I`d be pretty happy with the groups your getting. All you need is a fart of a breeze and the shot will be affected slightly.. Its still a head shot on a bunny though.. Quote Link to post

young1982 1
I forgot to say that we were prone using a harris bipod , hope this doesn’t change things to much. Quote Link to post
woz 260
nothing wrong with the groups at all mate.....would have been a dead bunny every shot..... Quote Link to post
stillair1 16
Hi as above I've got groups just under an inch at 100, occasionally one close to a 1/2" comes along. You might try using a bean bag under the butt if your not already. A higher mag scope might help you at the 100yd mark. Neil Edited February 10, 2008 by stillair1 Quote Link to post
garyw 0
YOUNG. dont get too hung up on shooting groups@ 100yds unless your going to shoot at 100 yds or more.if you think youre shooting at 70 yds then thats where you want to find out what the rifle does.most if not all 17 hmr rifles should be capable of killing a rabbitt or crow etc @ 100yds a lot is down to the ammo its fed and the shooter, good groups will come with a good trigger and good technique. plenty of practice will yield results my 17 annie will hold 1" @150 given the right conditions and me doing my bit. enjoy its why we buy them! young1982 1
Thanks everyone for your comments I'll be putting plenty of practice in and try to perfect a good technique, I'd like to try and tighten my groupings and cut down on randoms. I'm going to America (vegas/san francisco) in July so I'm saving the pennys to get a new scope when I'm out there, then look out I'll be deadly. Quote Link to post
