I just see it in some cases as lazy labelling now almost like using the "mental health issues" as the new "racism" card, kind of shuts down any discussion surrounding it and you mustn't question it which gives people with genuine mental health issues a real discredit.

I have to say that I am not being disparaging to anyone else's views, opinions or experiences with mental health issues and genuinely sympathise with anyone who lives with this in their life, I just struggle understanding it with my experiences.

Honest comment mate, fair enough.

Get ready it goes on for generations mate my grandson has all the same traits I did when young but he won’t be beaten or drugged up with tranquillisers as I was because I get him and we are best mates

Depends what you class as “bad behaviour”, for lots of these kids autism and it’s related conditions absolutely IS an excuse for “Bad”?? Behaviour because they don’t fit neatly into the box created by

I’m not going to lower this thread and a decent conversation to a level of our normal playground nonsense so I say this with total calm sincerity:

I personally think that question (as a wider question, not a personal attack on you) is an outrageous question……I wouldn’t for one second want to “engineer” my boy not to be my boy…..that’s just my opinion.

Brilliant post and kind of relates to my experiences. I feel we are not "genetically engineering" our way out of this issue we seem to be "medicating" our way out of it at a obscene level which is my personal concern.

Graft helps with depression. Having a crack with lads. An no better feeling in summer up on the roofs top off feeling that sun on ya back. If you feel sick first thing thought's running away in ya head. Soon has your up there on a grand day. Soon go away.

I agree, but I also take the view that what I believe and what works for my situation may be different to what works and is needed in other peoples situation.

ASD, like most family issues I suppose, is unique to each person and situation……everyone’s just doing the best they can.

Is it though, you're replying from your current perspective, would your perspective be the same at the sperm & egg level, before a deeply ingrained love was developed?

Would any parents, at the preconceived level, refuse any genetic engineering if they discovered that there's a high chance that their child would be disabled if they didn't remove certain genes at the sperm & egg stage?

It's a question society will have to ponder because this is just around the corner.

As you know, you have all sorts of tests during pregnancy.

You also know your own family history, my niece for instance has Down’s syndrome…..of course it flashes across your mind.

But no, I don’t think we should play god…..everything happens for a reason, we may not want it too, we may not understand why, but I believe it does.

This is a pretty deep question for me, and one I don’t want to bore everyone with but what happens to “you” has a ripple effect in the wider community, world, universe for good or bad…..if we engineer that away we engineer away life itself.

I’ll stop there or it will turn into a novel ! lol

Having experienced two systems, and from what I can make out, I think in the U.K. we should focus less on medication and genetic engineering and actually throw some resources at helping people in the family situation……people caring for relatives who are ASD or sick or disabled get absolute f**k all help worth the name in that country, financially they don’t get enough to feed a canary every week !
This then forces them and the people they care for into situations that are pure hell for them in order just to survive in a system that can’t stop robbing people !
It’s disgusting and even more disgusting when they can conjure billions out of their arse for absolute f***ing nonsense !
Giving people the means and the help and the breaks to take care of their own would ultimately be cheaper anyway but it don’t fit “the box” so they are abused instead.

I've had the worst of depression mate after my opp. Going from lifting decent weight in gym , dead lifting , clean & jerks , squats. to not been able to do nothing to do with weights for a good 18 months maybe longer with my stomach been opened up from that f***ing ulcer. Proper did me. Could lift roof tiles up on ladders. A was lifting 12 Marley's up at a time. Was physically fit. Like a say i ended up with PTSD. Was having nightmare after the op. I had one where my son had no skin on his back. That was frightening.
