Listening to radio , 1000 pools shut since 2010 , national average has dropped to 70% of year seven children being competent swimmers , drownings increasing. I went to my boys gala last week and it was a painful watch with many of the kids competing unable to swim some not able to complete a length and presumably thats the best of them else they wouldn't enter them .Another symptom of austerity kicking in. We could do with more pools in my area for sure.

There's a charity shop in a nearby town purely for raising funds to build a pool, there's also people hiring out a private pool . I guess they are expensive maybe the water companies should fund them...lol

Should imagine it’s the energy to heat them that’s the issue, the only way is for councils to subsidise them and a lot of councils are struggling as it is , most can’t even sort the pot holes out

No I agree , just another sign of lack of management and investment in public services , they're all too busy placating shareholders and all got their noses in the trough.

On a brighter note, I passed the swimming pool in Carlisle yesterday and noticed a sign saying kids can swim for ten pence after 1 pm.

It really took me aback. Some positive, progressive thinking for once.

Costs me 60 quid a month for swimming lessons for my 3 in the local council run pool, money well spent in my opinion, they've only 3 months left then it'll be a quid each any time they go.

I can remember as kids, an we was poor as chapel mice, that the local swimming baths, Woodside an all the other local ones in Glasgow used to let kids in free on days there was no school, so pre internet an mobile phone days we spent our time there when not at school

It's £27 quid a month at mine for swimming lessons that's what I pay for my lad
