Hard to imagine these days back in the early 70s there was numerous whippet racing meetings every Sunday morning at least 4 just in the Rotherham area.

Where I grew up we had Ashfield greyhound track in doorstep, not sure if whippets where raced in Glasgow or Scotland even back then but it was greyhounds by time I was old enough to go watch the time trials during the day

Got to say growing up around were i lived the whippet and racing was more popular with it being a mining area. Remember as a 12 year old me and a gang of us reprobates with our pack of mongrels and ferrets walking along the banks of the river Don one Sunday morning heading to a place called Thrybergh and nearing some ground at the back of Silverwood miners welfare ground and could hear the sound of a lot of dogs barking we went and had a look and it was whippet racing so watched a few races. Always remember how sound and friendly some big rough men were who were racing their whippets to us rag tag bunch of reprobates none of them told us to feck off and most of them asked if we had caught any rabbits.

I agree mate probably would have a bit of fun along with a shit load of grief knowing my luck. 😆

That's the thing, the game now  brings " a shit load of grief". Not worth it for old timers any more. Not me anyway.

Not me aswell mate. Mchull I get what you're saying and I suppose it's sad in a way when you get into your 60s like me and you don't really need the attention and grief had plenty in the past and tbh buzzed off it and still to this day get the odd reminder of my past poaching exploits like the next door neighbour who goes fishing and has a permit for Wentworth lakes and said to me why don't you get one and come fishing their i just burst out laughing and visualised my passport photo and application form to fish the lakes landing on some ones desk in the estate office. 😆 🤣

I honestly don’t know, mate, but looking at the pedigree of Sooty Sam there isn’t any bull, but pedigrees don’t always tell the truth. Some pedigree racing whippets were rumoured to have greyhound in them and the WRCA started dna testing when doubt arose.

To me, SS didn’t look like he had bull in him, but I remember my brother and I breeding a litter of non-ped whippets and the one I kept looked like a show winning pedigree whippet and the one my brother kept looked like a staffy !

You still get bully type throw backs in the non-peds quite regularly, but not so common, if at all, in the pedigrees, so i’d guess if SS had bull in him, and the amount of offspring he produced, id expect to see more bully types.

Just my opinion, of course.

Cheers.

Have owned both types whippets with bull and no bull. i can say in my honest opinion there was no bull in the bitch i had that SS sired back in 1994. She was 100% whippet temperament, i also came across quite a lot of later bred dogs and bitches. Red1, strike whilst the irons hot etc. Again i would say no bull in any of them.

My old paper work from the whippet I owned. Some decent breeding. Great little bitch she was. That's the bitch that a let Trev70 have for the deer hound grey / beddy grey. He'd seen her out few times. So came up with the swap for what he wanted her for an what land I was running.
