Aycliffe-Ferreter 6 Posted Saturday at 20:57 Report Share Posted Saturday at 20:57 (edited) Has anybody seen this video of Simon whitehead, the hutches look a decent size and easy to keep. But what do you think about the dimensions because they only look like a foot tall they aren’t much taller than the water bottles? Gilbey 1,470 Posted Saturday at 21:16 Report Share Posted Saturday at 21:16 (edited) They'll be breeding cages/hob cages, he had a big pen for them the rest of the time Edited Saturday at 21:33 by Gilbey Quote Link to post
Aycliffe-Ferreter 6 Posted Saturday at 22:16 Author Report Share Posted Saturday at 22:16 Yes I watched the video. Be handy to separate ferrets if need be. Quote Link to post
Gilbey 1,470 Posted Saturday at 22:59 Report Share Posted Saturday at 22:59 I'd make them taller personally, be easier cleaning them etc plus you could put a plank along the bottom if they were taller, to keep shavings in. Bigger all round if they were living in them.. 1 Quote Link to post
Aycliffe-Ferreter 6 Posted Sunday at 07:42 Author Report Share Posted Sunday at 07:42 (edited) Yeah I normally go for 2 foot high so they can climb too, I think I will make a 4x2x2 double with run down next. atb Edited Sunday at 08:02 by Aycliffe-Ferreter Quote Link to post
brambles 3,302 Posted Sunday at 16:43 Report Share Posted Sunday at 16:43 3 cages all linked with ramps but can be closed off to isolate hob from jills 10 Quote Link to post
The one 8,507 Posted Sunday at 17:08 Report Share Posted Sunday at 17:08 Usually say a 6x2x2 is fine for two ferrets but the bigger the better . I made mine 8x4x4 but i need a scrapper to reach the back to clean it out which is a pain but now im organised its easy Quote Link to post
Aycliffe-Ferreter 6 Posted Sunday at 18:13 Author Report Share Posted Sunday at 18:13 Yes I think 6x2x2 or a 4x2x2 which would make 8x2x2 with two floors is a handy size and I definitely agree when building something you have to make sure your arms are going to fit to clean it out. Aycliffe-Ferreter 6 Posted Sunday at 21:36 Author Report Share Posted Sunday at 21:36 That’s a good setup mate and definitely a bonus keeping them all together all year round. Quote Link to post

Chevy Chase 84 Posted Monday at 12:48 Report Share Posted Monday at 12:48 Interesting to hear his take on ferret breeding, and given that video is 11 years old I wonder what his take on it is now. I can’t say I’ve noticed a difference in the quality of ferrets I had as a teenager to what I’ve got now, but hey I’m no professional. Quote Link to post
Aycliffe-Ferreter 6 Posted Monday at 13:06 Author Report Share Posted Monday at 13:06 (edited) It’s very true I haven’t noticed any difference in the working abilities in 30 years but I guess he’s got to make up something to get some publicity. Even pet ferrets can be great workers. the only difference I see these days if people trying to add more EU polecat back into the gene pool. bad points being that the eu polecats are darker to hide ticks, they are more nocturnal because the polecats like to hunt in the dark and they’re much faster if you happen to take them to work hedges there’s more chance of them running away. then there’s the point of some being nervous around people, animals or unknown noises. I say leave the ferrets alone they work fine for what we need. atb Edited Monday at 13:09 by Aycliffe-Ferreter Edit Quote Link to post
