And what happens to American bases and nuclear missiles stored and primed in Britain? If they are saying stand on your own two feet to us, why should we continue to be their satellite state and weapons dump? The yanks are masters at having their cake and eating it. They don't do negotiations with the weak. I would welcome a stronger Europe, because we obviously cannot trust the Americans to stick it to the russians. And we may not in future be such a walkover for the yanks. But I don't really believe Nato will distance itself from America. Old habits are hard to break. But let's not forget that Trump and his mates are billionaires and venture capitalists. They are mooting Gaza to be the "Riviera of the Middle East". Trump has business interests in Russia, so does car salesman Musk. Their foreign policies are, and will continue to be, Kerching! As the man said, it’s not Russia or China we need to think of as Our prime concern…..our domestic politicians are the threat ! As for military cover, Europe can’t do it on its own…..even as a collective it comes nowhere even close to the United states. 1 US carrier battle group would do Europe in…..the US has 10 carrier battle groups ! The combined roll of all European armies is 1.4 million all in……the US is 2 million with 700,000 civilian personal added on and more state of the art kit than you can shake a stick at. I agree with some of what he said. I'm still trying to get my head round the granny with no previous who got two years for verbally abusing the Southport kiddie murderer. Travesty is not a strong enough description. But the yanks have a nerve lecturing us about democracy when Trump has bulldozed the idea of free and fair elections. America is ruled by an unholy alliance of billionaires who poured their collective money into getting Trump re _elected. Since when did billionaires have the little peoples welfare anywhere near the agenda? What did Trump do for ordinary people during his first term? The Ukraine situation has flared up the topic but I think NATO is the 20th centuries alliance. In the 21st century china is the adversary and so countries like SK, Japan and Australia are likely to be the key military allies for the US. Europe must start to look after its own back yard. However that whole speech wasn’t about defence, it was about liberal democracy, the single foundational value that maintained the alliance.
