Maybe I have read this wrong, but are you saying (and I don’t doubt you) that a bloke got 7 and did 4 for something that’s a recommendation of 30 almost anywhere else in the land ?

The toughest guy around this town is one of the nicest people you could meet . Ex military guy now doing forestry. Couldn't meet a nicer bloke . When my Mrs worked in the local pub he'd sit at one end of the bar and just chat about anything and everything and was a complete gent . I seen him lose it once when I was late teens in a pub and it was over someone slapping the back of his head while walking past him in a pub . It was like someone had just flipped a switch and he went from laughy joking to slinging this big bloke around the place and leathering him . 

Contrast that to the local bully types who would buy a drink at the other end of the bar and say nothing to my Mrs and just generally stare around the place 

I always felt a bit sorry for those types,  that's no sort of life always worried about image and always trying to be a tough guy while knowing full well theirs not much behind their image

There was another murder not far from where I used to live 2 gays one was much older than the other the older one got home from the pub one night they had a lover’s tiff the younger one caved the older ones chest in by jumping and stamping on him

Its like anything else the proof is in the pudding......bullies dont last long........old ex " hard men " as you call them,who operated at the highest echelons of crime and made their money work for them,enriching the lives of people they've been around forever with more money than they could ever spend maintaining close friendships built on loyalty and trust,well good luck to them i say........but bullies no, bullies tend not to make old bones as theres usually little stragglers who have never had anything going on in life ready watching and targeting them....jealousy is an evil trait and bullies are simple to deal with, hence they dont last very long.

My cousin punched a fella in a street fight 2003,he was dead before he hit the ground...was out in 2 1/2 yrs...my middle brother knocked a fully grown man out,ended up in a wheelchair ,full-time carer etc..when he was 17,ended up doing 8 1/2 yrs... justice system in this country is f****d

Manslaughter can be a really tricky case to prove or disprove, a pal of mine who fought for a British Title killed a man working on a door years ago.....the other bloke started on him but because he ended up walking away and my pal took a few steps towards him he was seen as the aggressor,he was hit once and fell hitting his head on a concrete step.....copped a full blown murder charge and served 11 years because he was an ex fighter.

Don’t doubt it mate, but what Dai describes is a 30, no ifs, no buts, it’s 30 and it was a 30 forty years ago too.

Be interesting, if someone had an interest in such things, to read the details and how they came up with 7

1980 a young 18 year old Dai Walks past the local shop and hears some shouting in the distance there’s 2 old fella’s getting hammered by this young lad same age as me  I run across gives him the bad news and helps the old guys up off the floor 10 years or so later in one of the roughest pubs on the estate this lad starts his nonsense so I tell him to get f****d and off he f****d He only went to his mother in laws raped and killed her and set fire to the house I regret not putting that c**t in hospital that night

Back in the black and white days council estates were self governing places where everybody looked after each other. People were in and out of each others houses, borrowing essentials or just gossiping. Mothers talked about childhood diseases. The background noise when I was a kid was impetigo, mumps, measles, chicken pox, rickets and ringworm. When the NHS kicked in  mothers thought it was like winning the lottery. 

There was violence  and prostitution outside. It was a dock area, but  family women and kids were given a free pass, so I never felt afraid. It was actually a very pleasant  and peaceful existence.

Moving to Rochdale flats as a teenager was something else. A nightmare of drug dealers, petty muggers and poverty. Putting people in battery cages causes their behaviour to hit rock bottom. But I guess there are other reasons too as to why human behaviour just plummets to worse than animals.
