I love watching the youtube vids of people opting out of the rat race and choosing to live in Alaska in a isolated log cabin or the UK in a van tucked up in a lay by. The thing is every single one of them still has to pay the "man" at some stage, none are truly self sufficient.

It goes back to what I said originally, wealth is all relative.

That's true mate when I bought my first terraced house in 82 after getting married I worked all the overtime I could at the pit and in six months got the the thousand pounds deposit for the terraced house that faced herringthorpe playing fields in a fairly decent area for 9 and half grand. When I tell lads who I work with i don't think they believe me how easy it was back then to buy your own house if you were a grafter. Now days lads grafting in warehouses and most factories don't stand a chance of saving for a deposit if they lived at work.

It's True when a first met him a good friend said he's a right scuffy c**t isn't he. A said he needs a wash lol. My mate said he could wash his self down in 50s if he wanted too. Me a said what you mean. He's a f***ing millionaire 🤣🤣🤣. Lives in a carvan on site , has a cabin that he built with wash facilities. Then at side a kick back room with TV. He was paid some more money for a bridge that was put over the stretch of river that connects to the hepworth art gallery. Then he was paid out again for a mobile phone mast at end of his yard. Lol. Doesn't do nowt for f**k all.

Same age as my eldest daughter 😆 Some tough times though better than it is now

And I ended up having to sell the house in 85 not long after being on strike for a year due to the mortgage doubling to catch up on the year they froze it and some other issues but it only took 3 weeks for the council to re house us in the house i am in now due to medical issues with one of my kids and the house was not far from her mother's to help her when I was at work. Thought I ended up buying it under the right to buy for 19 an half grand the only favour Maggie Thatcher did for me. 😆

Paid 19 grand for mine worth about 160 grand now. A few mates have said try and get a nice council bungalow with the wife's health conditions and sell it and have a few bob in the bank as they will only end up taking it of you if we end up in a care home. Can't say I'm not tempted when I retire in a couple of years though it's nice not having to fork out on a mortgage or rent every month.

Money makes you less hesitant to invest ( say property as example) you not worried buying a few house for investment because you have money to back it up if thiers a few months with out tenants etc. or any other problems. Don’t gamble what you can’t afford to loose kind of thing

Yea being mortgage or rent free is a big milestone in your life and frees up a fair bit of cash which comes in handy when the kids are still young, I've been told to use the equity that's in this place to reinvest but I'd probably end up having to buy it back off the bank for 190k. Lol.

Thought of that 10 yrs back...but you need planning and to jump through hoops to get water/electric to it....there's always some sort of restrictions or your paying over the odds....ain't just as easy to buy some land and crack the f**k on mate, learnt that lesson having horses for the Mrs and daughter 👍

Have you thought about buying a piece of riverside land , that has its own mooring dc ?.

Land is getting more expensive over the last few years , but long term it would be much cheaper than living in a marina , and you can still cash it out when you've finished with it.

I was looking at narrow boats a few years ago , but it worked out to be as expensive as renting a house if you had a permanent mooring in a marina.

I looked at a nice piece of land , with its own 40yard Mooring . The thing that stopped me from buying it , was that it was next to a piece of council land , and Polish has been fishing on the council land , and had been shitting everywhere.
