I hope the “Statute of Limitations “ has passed, but many years ago Sunderland Greyhound track had a whippet time trial open with bookies in attendance. Anyhow, my pal had a decent black 20” whip

There were lots of flapping tracks in this area years ago.  An entry into my diary from 1972; Pelaw Grange and Stanley Greyhound tracks; Cheers.

The truth of the matter is Greyhound racing is a lucrative Merciless game iv had owners of greyhounds knock my door offering me 3 -4 year old dogs for free that they payed between 5k -10k  plus for it

Just checked, it’s still going, I’m pleasantly supprised, but as you can see, it’s over 50 years since I raced there .

Cheers.

It would be great to gather together all the scams and stories surrounding the tracks. My favourite concerns a bloke who had a really tall greyhound. It was common knowledge that this dog could really motor but the owner was keeping it back until it reached really good odds. So that night finally came, and a split second before the start of the race the owner and his mates all placed big money simultaneously.  Sure enough, the dog trapped like lightning and was pissing the race by 4 lengths or more. The bookies were in for a hiding until a little whippet suddenly "broke free" from a spectator and interfered with the race. The tannoy announced " void race". Clever buggers bookies.

I can still remember the hissy fitting the owner made. Threats of hidings and murder. The bookies were smug.

I hope the “Statute of Limitations “ has passed, but many years ago Sunderland Greyhound track had a whippet time trial open with bookies in attendance.

Anyhow, my pal had a decent black 20” whippet called Silly Rocket and I had a good scratch racing 24” whippet called Pot Black.
The Rocket was put in the time trial and was given a mark of scratch. Then Pot Black was swapped for the actual race and walked it !

I think it was priced at 7/2 and we put everything we had on it, collected our winnings and made the break back north as fast as the old Viva van would go !

Beating the bookies or the handicapper was never considered cheating…..just part of the game !

Cheers.

If you mean Gretna shutting for the house mate , the fella who owned it wasn’t that sort of man mate , he was a good sort like .

no typo mate , the words Gretna and shit are intrinsically linked I’m afraid

I don't think it should be banned but they need to get rid of some of the trainers who aren't dogmen at all.

New Zealand is totally banning greyhound racing from next year (2026).

Signed....when i was a kid there was 16/17 tracks in London....with Crayford going last month we're now down to 1 ( Romford )

Im sure much of it was natural demise with the land being worth more than the tracks can make but i dont think its just coincidence to see another British tradition/culture being wiped out.
