ive got an 18mth old dog and a 11 yr dog, after work on friday took the young terrier and the lurcher for a quick walk out, terrier flushed afew rabbits for the lurcher which got her warmed up abit as it was so warm and mild, found afew holes that look to deep for me to try the terrier in on my own, on the way back to the motor i was looking at the dogs and thinking yer these two will do just fine working together, walking up the field there is 3 blocks of round bales about 40 long by 10 wide, the dogs were checking the gaps, no scent in the first or second block, but the third one got the dogs attention, the lurcher shot up the gap and came out the other end with the terrier not far behind her,i jumped on top of the bales to get a view, the lurchers coat had turned black with the wet rotting straw, she jumped up on top and started to go along the rows head down looking in the small gaps, up comes the terrier and he does the same, the lurcher stops and sort of marks a spot right in the middle of the block,i went to the end and in goes the terrier the lurcher couldnt get in the gap so im on top with the lurcher waiting for a bolt, no bolt, on with the b&f bang in the middle, gets me head down for a listen, not a sound just a little bumping, i thought shit how can i get to him, out comes the opinal, cuts the wrapping away and start to pull chunks of straw out,the lurcher is getting in the way whinning and digging and im getting a bit hot under the collar my self, next thing the b&f changes tone and out comes the border abit worse for wear, i didnt know if any thing had bolted as i was in the middle of the bales, the two dogs had done ok work wise, the sun was starting to dip so i gets my things and sets off to the motor, DOG back in the bales and he is baying like mad, lurcher trying to dig to him, gets a mark start to pull more chunks out of the way, felt some bumping, it goes quiet out comes the dog, this time i put the lead on him as i though its going to give him the run a round all night long, off home, clean the dog up, who is now feeling very sorry for him self. off out saturday morning old border dog and the lurcher, flushed 2 fox, one went to ground just a few feet in front of the lurcher, lurchers in the hole trying to dig on, old border comes along and trys to dig on , a chicken could have moved more dirt than the old fella, i smiled and said come on old man youve had your day,
