Great nights out at the dogs or speedway.. Now Exeter Chiefs have am amazing shiny new Stadium it costs a fortune to go, it's pretty much designed for corporate events in a lot of ways...nothing like the old County Ground... no dog tracks near here now, speedway gone... I meant when the quarry is gone away. Do you want a dog to follow up on scent like a hound or to know when the quarry is lost and come back to hand ? These days you can’t have a dog running all over the countryside for ages. Maybe before the ban on permission that might be acceptable,( but never for me). Yes, follow up into cover or woods but within reason ….there’s plenty game out there, no need for a running dog chasing a scent for ages like a foxhound or beagle. Cheers. follow it until it pipes or gets away mate but yes once’s it is gone it’s took a min hunting about area i want it back but most do anyway they realise the action is around you tracker for me is more about getting to them mate as fast as i can and trying it sometimes you can end up miles wrong way even on lamp with this your heading to it like you say on off or the quicker you get things put down the better 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I like a dog to return when it loses sight and not follow scent. It's rarely going to catch anything following scent after the first ten yards. And its absolutely essential to return when a lamp is switched off. We all know a lamping dog that hunts up scent is useless. I also like a dog to return if it is outpaced which can happen if you're running a knockabout lurcher. Shock horror! I know a lot of lurchermen will call a dog a quitter in those circumstances. But for me it's common sense. Would it be preferable if it exhausted itself and then dropped dead? Or coursed for miles across several counties, roads and motorways? An exhausted dog is no good to a anybody. Give me a sensible dog with a realistic knowledge of its own abilities. I also prefer a dog which works out a rabbit is too close to its burrow to bother with. Seems a reasonable tactic to me. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Our local track has gone and several others. Part of the fun of non registered greyhound racing was that you could flit from track to track and nobody knew if your dog was a) trying that night or b) any good. Maybe I'm paranoid but there seems to be a concerted effort to attack traditional working men's hobbies. Pigeon racing is in the animal rights lobby's sights now because birds are lost. The number of countries permitting greyhound racing is diminishing all the time. Bleeding big brother! Wales is deciding this year on whether to ban and thus close the one registered greyhound track left in the country. Some good news though Scotland "is not persuaded " to end greyhound racing.
