Funny how dogs' ability to find their way back to their owner varies a lot. I've had lurchers which could find me in the thickest of woods after they'd been hunting. And others which have no ability to locate and have to be whistled up. Some have uncanny ability and others totally crap.

The dog below is my son's dog. Collie/grew. Canny all round bitch. No top speed but game and very competent .

This dog could find me. If it wanted, an if it was barren land he most prob would come looking for me, but he literally only wants to graft, not too fussed for nowt else, so that’s his main priority, I hope he settles after a season or 2, but have accepted he may not haha he a far cry from the Plummer an the kelpie cross I not long lossed, but Plummer would have been in a sorry state if she tried this lads job, so it’s swings and roundabouts I suppose, I’m just too old now to waking about checking spots after he goes over horizon, a bit of an idea what way he gone an it save me a load a fannying about, I hope haha

Interesting how a dog works

I like a dog to range around 30-50 yards from me when working a field.

This bitch I’ve got now has only just started doing that to my requirements.

Its when they lose the quarry when the fun begins.

This bitch isn’t the keenest at crashing into cover, and when she loses sight of her quarry comes back to hand.

The deer x I had previous had no problem with cover or woods, but was never away long enough for me to worry.

The beddy type would do cover like a spaniel or terrier and follow up quarry on scent and could be away ages, so I’d just stay where I’d last seen her and she unfailingly found her way back to me.

They are all different, even when similarly bred..

Cheers.
