At least not taxed on pensions for a start. I tend to agree with points on both sides of the argument on this thread and I think it's down to how our taxes are spent and used unwisely that gets all our backs up.

That's something we can all agree, perhaps we should have more say in where it goes?

Think that's called senility lol.

They say they agree with taxes, they're just confused as to how much. Lol

We were told “ don’t worry , it’s a tax on luxury goods, only millionaires buying Rolex watches and Rolls  Royce’s will pay it !
That didn’t last long, did it ?

Now you pay it on everyday purchases. You pay it on the tax you pay on your petrol ! How on earth can we pay tax on a tax ?

Thr EU ordered us to pay 5% VAT on our gas and electric bills. We were promised it would be removed when we had Brexit, has it been ? Has it hell. And of course we all pay an average of £300 a year green subsidy tax on our fuel.

Or how about the 20% tax Labour has introduced on school fees ? The only country I the world to tax education ! Even the communists didn’t tax education!

When did boiling a kettle or heating your home or educating your kids become a luxury ?

Do you know most petrol and diesel car tax will double if it produces more than 163 co2 starting in April ?

Yet still we are borrowing to give it away to foreigners, both here and abroad .

Yes, tax is a necessary evil, but it should be managed far better.

Cheers.

So, the argument is basically about the quality of governance, not necessarily the level of taxation. Governments should be more transparent and accountable in how they allocate tax revenue. No arguments from me.

you’ve been quiet sharko what’s your thought mate

To be totally honest, Gooey, when it comes to politics, and especially politics and figures, I'm totally out of my depth, mate.

Probably not the best answer in the world, but my mind sort of automatically blanks off when large figures and politics are being discussed.  👍

I'll still read the thread though, hopefully pick up a bit of knowledge?  👍

Wow this is a good thread. The subject of taxation really gets people to the core.

Going back Wilf....no offence whatsoever taken at being told I'm talking out of my arse. If we were at a bar having a difference of opinion. One of us would say " don't talk f****n shit, I'm going for a pee, get the drinks in". But when it's written, members get furious because others can read it and it goes straight to their ego and self identity. One thing I have noticed about West Ham lads, as you know I worked with plenty at Dagenham, is that you  could have a confrontation and then forget all about it and not nurse a grievance. And the same is true on here. Probably nothing to do with West Ham, I just meant people from your part of the world. And I'm well aware I can sometimes present as a  repetitive SJW.

Charts, most of what you say is perfectly sensible imo. I enjoy your posts. But sometimes I'm scratching my head. As when you stated that Labour were going to ban cage bird keeping, dog racing and now we're all going to be freezing in our homes and facing food shortages because of militant farmers. I also can't understand how a working class man, from one of the most deprived areas of the country can defend tax breaks for public schools. Public schools and farms for that matter, are  businesses like any other. Why should we as pensioners have to subsidise extremely wealthy people? They've got away with the dodge for years. Why argue we should be subsidising huge wealth? Don't get it mate.

More generally, nobody speaks for us. The media is owned  by the super rich and they decide what to report on and how to spin it. They even have their own "news channel" spinning right wing propaganda 24/ 7.

We've got nothing except a vote every five years. And nothing to vote for. Charts put it very well when he described a "Lab/Con/Lib" pact. Their policies havent a cigarette paper between them.

Just my opinion but the next election I believe we are heading for a hung parliament, I do read these topics with interest and sometimes I write out lengthy replies to contribute, but then a little voice in my head says delete it don’t do it because you know you can’t be arsed with the constant table tennis of having to reply to defend your position, very frustrating reading sometimes but interesting otherwise I wouldn’t be here.

As for taxing education I obviously see it very different to you.
Both my children were privately educated as is my grandson and I’m nowhere near “extremely wealthy”. In fact I think it’s wrong that people who chose private education for their children are taxed TWICE.
They pay tax to the public purse, of which a percentage goes to fund education. These people are not availing themselves of state education and prefer to pay for private education, shouldn’t the have a rebate on their taxes ?

Your previous post about it being great that some family farms may go bust because then ordinary lads could buy a acre or two was naive in the extreme. That land will be far to expensive for anybody but the very rich, whilst working class farmers will lose their lively hoods.

I wonder what your reaction to todays news that Labour are thinking of cutting billions off the welfare bill, particularly cutting PIP ?

Next point, Labour in Wales HAVE banned greyhound racing and it was mentioned in a manifesto meeting to ban the keeping of cage birds, but not implemented.

But while we’re on , perhaps you’ll give me an apology for calling me out about the Calwalladr/ Banks affair? After all Calwalladr lost in court and had to apologise and pay costs to Banks.

Or how about when you accused me of lying about the terrorist blowing up a taxi outside the Liverpool Maternity hospital ? An absolutely true event .

My questions are rhetorical, I can guess you replies and won’t waste time awaiting an apology.

Cheers.

Lot of spin here and a lot of unnecessary  bitterness.

Private schools allow kids in a race a ten yard start. You are happy for that injustice to continue and you want  the rest of us to pay for it. Part of the problem in british politics is that politicians from private schools have no knowledge of the real world and pass laws to help each other.

I don't remember rejoicing about family farms going bust.  Not.gonna happen.

I don't vote Labour. I do not support  cutting benefits.

Dog racing and cage bird keeping are not going to be banned. Greyhound racing will eventually be banned because of the powerful animal rights lobby. It will go the same way as it has in other countries most recently in New Zealand. Whippet racing will not be banned. There are no welfare issues there.

No apology for Carol C. She exposed Banks'  secret meeting with the russians which he'd denied. He was a millionaire. He went after a journalist and not the organisation she worked for, the normal route. He got her on a technicality. It was bullying. We need independent journalists. I am pleased to say her court costs were crowd funded.

You stated a terrorist had planted bombs in a maternity unit which was  not true.

I certainly apologise if I've offended you. Not my intention at all honestly. It's a forum where we exchange ideas as I've said to you before repeatedly. Nothing against you, don't know you. I take issue with some of your political opinions, as you do with mine.

You posted this on this thread …… exactly as I said

Cheers.

They are not going bust. They walk away with the proceeds of the farm. Several hundred thousands maybe millions. It won't happen. Business  always exaggerate and overstate their case to try and influence public opinion. I called it a "nightmare situation."  Capitalism is capitalism. Shit happens to the rest of us too.

Not the point ; you said you didn’t remember saying it would be great if the nightmare scenario of farms going bust happened …. But you DID say it . It’s here on this thread .
