Best hound in pack has started back scenting at a check and pulling others off the line. Anyone much experience with this, is it huntsman error that causes it or is it just one of those things

How old is it? Does it struggle to keep up when there right?

7 no quite the opposite he’s still up front leading the way. Only a small pack of 5-10 hounds between us. He’s back tracking at a mark as well if he’s not caught up quickly

Honestly once they start it it doesn’t usually get any better seen decent packs get ruined because the huntsman wouldn’t do the right thing and it’s always the hound with the best noise

Hunting a heel line or back scenting isnt a bad thing all packs do it when they get confused and if scent conditions are on and off. Dont worry bout it the bassets i go with do it too.

I’ve heard it all now Im parting my pack I’ve been doing it wrong all this time so there’s a small foot pack looking new hunts man the down side with them are as follows

they won’t hunt a rabbit hare or deer

100% fox only

b*****ds for marking holes

catch the odd fox in cover or on hill that’s right they have dug the odd one out before terrier man has got there

come back to the horn and are easily walked out

think that’s about about it for there bad point

FORGOT they don’t hunt heel line or leave a mark

so they are there for the right hunt man id really be interested in a few heel hounds if anyone know of any

thanks

How’s it not a bad thing? If hounds are flat out on the line then come to a check and 1 hound takes the whole pack back the way they came. Fox under no pressure then and hounds scattered everywhere in the wrong direction

Then they should be pts a back tracking hound causes mayhem in a hunt during a hunt you'll not be able to read the hunt  it's a fault  and a bad one that'll ruin every young dog you bring out with it you wouldn't want to bred out of it and it's something that'll not get better I'd get rid before he wrecks the rest of your hounds one place for a hound like that
