I started work in 1978 and I got corned beef on my piece for a year solid before I asked my old mam if she couldn't maybe change it.  She did, she added brown sauce.

I well remember nutritious, wholesome meals made with cheap cuts of meat like lamb lap or ribs, ham shank, belly pork, ( yes, it was a cheap cut at one time !) scrag end, neck end, oxtail, etc. N

When my daughters were young (bear in mind their both young twenties now) corn beef hash was a staple meal every week, coz it was cheap, I think a tin of asda corn beef was about 15p, my daughters called it poor hash! Then the horse meat scandle raised its head and prices sky rocketed. It might be rose tinted glasses but I think the horse meat tasted better, it was probably better cuts of the horse, rather than the floor toppings of beef.

To be honest for a while now, all the once well known cheap cuts that could feed a family aren't so cheap, those celebrity chefs that thought they were doing people on a budget a favour have made the nose to tail eating fashionable and pushed the prices up.

Rant over........for now

When I started work I told my mum I liked poloney, (anyone remember that ? ), sandwiches and I got them every day until I asked for a change. She said “ but you said you liked poloney “ !

Think you can buy it in any supermarket , don't think the butcher would make a highly processed garlic sausage? But it is a meat product I guess

I just showed my missus as she's always saying how coned beef was a staple in West Indian homes when she was a kid (bully beef and rice?When I showed her the pick she said 3.50 and it aint even a Bujey one.

Mam used to make it, mouth's watering at the memory. The word panackelty was sometimes used but more often she just called the dish tatey pot. Mam was from the Teams though. Going off on a tangent... she always maintained that when playing out along the Teams river baby otters where a common site in the murky black coaly water. Dad would always tried to correct her, they would have been rats not otters man! but she always stood her ground, no, they were baby otters. Was never really sure if she believed it or not 🙂
