I think the obsession with genetics and looks and breeds are relatively new, nearly 1900s before that only function mattered and most breeds were purely local types that were bred with other local types.

Looks mean nothing in a dog that's for sure. All the best dogs I have seen have looked far from a athletic specimen to be honest they have looked almost worn and tired before leaving the house lol and turned the work out and caught plenty.
