🤔Bred several litter of F1 hybrids,.. using Collies and Greyhounds as Sires and Dams,...and other than the Greyhound bitches producing larger litters,.. we have found very little genetic difference...

🤔I grew up around Sheepdogs and Cattle curs, and we did have collie saturated lurcher dogs,...but, nobody I ever knew,.. had an actual Greyhound🙄 There was one about somewhere,. obviously,.. but our l

🤔Yeah,...its amazing that some guys still continue to argue/debate about a subject, that in reality, needs no arguing about...🙄 Regarding the F1 Collie x Greyhound hybrid,..an easy enough product

Well it's heartwarming to see that a good collie/grey thread can still get lads arguing...lol...

I never understood why anybody would want an f1 cross...4 Hancock f1 I saw were all wank...don't get me wrong I've seen a few other home bred half collies that were good....but in all honesty the best I've seen were line bred...or lurchers with collie in them...or 3/4 running dog...or even just a tiny splash of collie...like an 8th

I still find it funny when I read that some folk think the f1x collie greyhound is the be all and end all of being the best lurcher. Never really owned a world beater though owned a few handy lurchers in the past with a touch of collie in them.

Frustrating rather than heartwarming.  I and l expect others keep clicking on the new posts hoping to see a bit of interesting  input .

I guess Tomo you do need half crosses to produce 3/4 or line bred collie lurchers🙂

I've had other crosses but to be honest a first cross has always done what l needed.  And my dogs have always been expected  to do a lot more than simply chase stuff .

A knowing  Victorian writer wrote something along the lines of  " a man might not select the best dog but instead choose the one that will bring less attention "

Recent experiences also has me thinking that the border collie might not be  the best choice for producing the "greyhound- sheepdog cross" of history.

I'm tempted to find out.🙄

That bit in the middle...you want a dog to do other things....you can do that with most lurchers...

Buts let's be honest the idea of a lurcher is to catch game...and if they can't out run it there not catching it

The first cross bitch i had some years back was very easy to live with and a good natured dog but just did not have the early pace to snap rabbits up in the lamp local the young lad who i gifted her to kept her till she died of old age and was happy with her going rabbiting and lamping up in the dales. Her litter brother that made 25tts was a decent lamp dog even local. She only leveld out at 22tts. Though being honest she would suit me nowadays just mooching about in local woodland though not as a catch dog more of a companion.

I think some ,not most ,so called lurchers  "could" do a lot more than is asked of them  , but with respect to the people who do use their dogs as all rounders, a heck of a lot of running dogs wouldn't  make the grade as multi taskers  . Any more than a first cross would be any good in the coursing field.

I am a bit biased though Tomo. Having grown up in a crowded bit of countryside with small fields and not a hare for 50 miles l only needed something fast enough for the two Rs, steady enough for "various" and sneaky enough not to gather attention .

Sheep dog cross does for me, obviously not you Tomo.

Neither of us is wrong, just different .

🤔Yeah,...its amazing that some guys still continue to argue/debate about a subject, that in reality, needs no arguing about...🙄

Regarding the F1 Collie x Greyhound hybrid,..an easy enough product to produce,...and in truth, this style of work dog was once produced, on a massive commercial scale,...there really is no mystery to them.

Disregarding the noted Black Country Sting , where so much hype and frequent exaggeration was forwarded,.. most Sheepdog/Running dog lurchers were the product of home-bred, backyard breeding, and often none the worse for it...Such animals were created because their owners wanted this type of dog, OR,..as in my own case,. and I've walked out with many curs (some canine and a few human😉) we used a collie on a running dog, because that was all we had available...

You have got to want a first cross,.. really want it..

Such animals, IF they possess the thinkers of the herding half,.. can be childishly easy to school,.. I've had a novice sapling sit, stay, walk to heel, retrieve , etc, in an afternoon,.. job done and dusted....👍🏾

By the same token,. .I've struggled with more than a few examples that were, in my opinion,.. virtually untrainable....They had problems, that even if cured,.. the end product would never justify the effort required to achieve, any modicum of success.. Indeed,  I have found that in terms of temperament and physicality, the first cross Collie/Greyhound can often be the worst of hybrids,.. for when they are bad, they are very bad.

It is for this reason, that many hunting enthusiasts, keep well away from such a lurcher type and instead, stick to what they are familiar with...

One can understand this attitude, and although I prefer a working dog to own the quicksilver response to command and  savvy of the herder,. I must confess that the dogs I used most when I was active , had little or no sheepdog influence....

Back in the day I had no requirement for any deep thinking critters,...my main criterion was power and speed, and a willingness to engage in pursuit. 😉

Obviously, such debates over this subject will continue ad infinitum,.. and in many ways it is good to talk and possibly come up with views that have not already been mentioned or considered, over the decades,.. but,.. I feel that it is unlikely...

I believe all that can be said on the subject of what lurcher a man should keep, has already been,... well and truly said....😀

Collie lurcher - clever is not the word for these dogs , I` d have one as a gun dog any day of the week, however a German short haired pointer is a marvelous airgun hunters dog, a total all rounder of a dog , bar , coursing mind. I` ve seen collie lurchers turn their nose up at certain situations in coursing because they knew what to expect from the run they were about to take on they are annoyingly clever dogs at times, I have seen this many times they will actually refuse the chase , I was once great friends with some traveller lads, boy they new their lurcher dogs, the best lurcher I ever owned was a ferocious little fella called Brett, a cross between a Whippet, , Jack Russell, bitch, he was like jaws out of water.

heres my GSP working lads, he lives to work he adores it he's nearly 11yrs old now.
