I hung out with an Army guy for a few seasons,.. we mostly did the rabbits and a few Roe,.. and I pretty soon realised, that being in the Military was a bit different to working in a Factory, or for some building firm.. He had to abide by certain rules. There was obviously a few fiddles and opportunities to slink off,.. more so if you had a bit of Rank, and had been in a Regiment for several years, and knew how to work the system... But,.. on the whole, my pal had to toe the line and be available, if called upon. The guy I was rabbiting with, was permanently based on Salisbury Plain,... which at that time, had a fairly healthy population of rabbits, hares and Deer,.. so,.. being employed to undertake his duties on the ground, on a daily basis, allowed him to do a phenomenal reconnoitre,.. whilst being paid to do so ! Each week he would mark out,.. on a Map,.. where all the various rabbiting spots were,.. and accordingly, we filled out boots and caught many hundreds of rabbits, and various.. Not quite sure what constitutes regular dog work,.. for as we all know, folk can drift in and out of the hunting game, with some regularity,. and friendships are frequently fragile affairs,.. and can end abruptly,...but for those few years at least ,...we were at it, both by day, and frequently at night... Hi, yeah, I would probably have met the Guy,...I seemed to cross paths with the majority of folk mentioned in the early jottings , books, articles, etc.... Facts were, back then, I used to get about a bit ,...I always had an almost perverse urge to meet various people, described as being, genuine hunting men... It took me a few years,.. but, I eventually grew out of it,...I stopped searching for heroes, and then everything became, a whole lot clearer... Edited Monday at 22:06 by OldPhil 7 Quote Link to post

The lad with the glasses on looks familiar and I believe i met him back in the day. I used to be the same about meeting different folk who walked the walk so to speak especially some of the old poachers from the area who's stories and tales I would never tire of listening to even though running dogs were never part of their arsenal for taking game from various estate's in the area of south Yorkshire and beyond. 2 Quote Link to post
paulus 26 Posted Sunday at 08:09 Report Share Posted Sunday at 08:09 There use to be a few opportunities i can remember, One was on the BCU (Bird Control Unit) on airfields, Scaring birds and controlling Mammal's were the job, so BOP, Dogs, Guns, Traps and gas guns were used. The other one would have been as Range warden, Again mas swathes of countryside with little to no access to the public. Probably no long done by servicemen but contracted out to some civilian company or other nowadays. There has always been a few dog men in the police force but that's another topic Lol.
