Lest we forget

Recommended Posts

Watching the remembrance at the cenotaph now.

I do my own bit for remembrance, researching medals, visiting local lads graves abroad, fishing days for help for heroes etc etc .....but I just can't get onboard with the official remembrance day. Fckin traitor king who stays quiet while the country gets invaded, churches being pulled down and mosques but up while taking oaths to defend the realm and faith. Blair stood there.

Nah fck that. I'll honour our war dead by trying to do my best for the rest of the year....not taking part in any of these attention seeking circuses. Lammy is laying a wreath now 🙄

Apologies if I offend anyone.

Just put it back on and it's the parade of veterans. Wonderful to hear the history of each of the regiments as they march past. The commentator is doing a good job

On Remembrance Sunday Labour announce they are cutting the funds to schools Army Cadets , to save £1 million.
Are they really that stupid or are they deliberately trying to piss people off ….. or both ?
Cheers.

My dad lied about his age so he could join the Royal Navy with his brother when he was 15 during ww2

Yes, both my granddads fought in ww 1, one of them was English, the other Irish.

Cheers.

My Grandad on my Dad's  side fought in WW1  .

My Mum's Dad was very religious and knowing he couldn't  shoot at anyone ,he joined the London Fire Brigade at the start of WW2 . He served as a Leading Fireman  during the Blitz .

Neither ever spoke of their experiences until they fell to chatting one Christmas in the early 1970s . Not even my Dad knew of the huge scar on his Father's  leg; the result of a shell hitting his horse .  He survived having three horses killed under him . I inherited some of his memorabilia and looking through it realised that he was mentioned in dispatches more than once . There are also letters and a very big book  that his commanding officer sent him a couple of years after the war as thanks for his services .

My Mum's  Dad's  choice of the London Fire brigade in WW2 was hardly the easy option . What he saw was horrific and the long shifts, wet , freezing conditions and disrupted meals wrecked his health for the rest of his life .

No doubt fewer poppies will be sold each year , family memories  of the horror will evaporate  and the relevance of Rememberance Sunday will fade for coming generations. That's  understandable and l doubt  the men ,women and children who were  killed in the two World Wars    asked for fame or eternal rememberance as they died .

As a reminder of the foulness of those wars and those that are still rumbling on to this day their memories are still sadly very relevent .

My grandfather on my mothers side was single handedly responsible for bringing down four german fighter planes during the battle of Britain.

Worst mechanic the german airforce ever had by all accounts.

Have put this up before , my grandad was a ww2 spitfire pilot. Was 19 and trained in Canada before he went up. Got shot down and lived to tell the tale and went on to own a string of wine merchant's.  Was some fella and some get up and go. I still have his dog tags and wings.
