I get your point about them being suited to the slop due to them running heavy going sand in Arab land but it's not because they have adjusted to our land through centuries of selective breeding. Lol I'd say most that are here are down off relatively recent imports? 1 Quote Link to post
chartpolski 24,774 Posted Sunday at 13:25 Report Share Posted Sunday at 13:25 The crossing of the saluki and the greyhound was done for one reason and one reason only; to get as near the stamina of the saluki and as near the speed of the greyhound. Much the same as the non-ped whippet is the result of judicious breeding together of the whippet and the greyhound, to get the size of the whippet and the speed of the greyhound. I said years ago that maybe it was time for the coursing bred dog and the non-ped whippet to be recognised as breeds in their own right, after all, both their “pedigrees “ can be traced back many generations. Not recognised by the KC, I hasten to add, that would be the death knell for both breeds ! Cheers. 3 Quote Link to post

But why would they do that if the saluki is canine perfection for hunting game like hares, deer, gazelle? I do agree with mC in as much as men crossed what they had at the time, if the gene pool of saluki's was very small or non-existent then the natural step would be to cross with a greyhound, or a lurcher.
