there's a boy stays down the road from me who used to course pure deerhounds in the competitions in Scotland and england I'll need to find out more info on them he was good pals with miss noble 

I was talking to a friend of mine from Manchester the other night who has a half brother to my deer/grey bitch and we agreed that it would be a shame if genuine working deerhounds and deer greys die out.

Both our dogs have Doxhope and Ardingclass , ( Miss Nobles line), in them and top class Irish coursing greyhound blood. 
Both pure and cross deerhounds are a joy to see in full flight on a hare or roe daytime.

Of course there are better crosses, and I’ve had some, but the deerhound types are easy going and easy on the eye….I like them.

Well done mate good going. Aye the Facebook groups are already starting to get busy again not a peep out them during the winter now the good dogs have all of a sudden reappeared

I'll find out more info on the ones he's had and any pics. His daughter still has a dog one it's a beauty nice racey type but don't think it's ever seen a thing. 
 

as you say it's a real shame if they had to die out or become only show hounds a lot of fun to be had with them think it's just their size and the way the laws are these days that puts people off them

Chart , did you ever deal with a lad called tom burns . He bred deer x greys . Originally from Stirling and moved up to wick in caithness.  Nice man

Just out of interest do you know if he was related to a bloke called Dennis burns from Elgin, he won a comp in Scotland years ago called the Cawdor coursing challenge and then put Caulfield’s Joe to his bitch that won the comp, I travelled up and bought a pup off him, long old drive that was about 17 hour round trip but worth it the pup turned out to be a very good bitch

No mate, I’ve heard of him but never met him .

Deer/Greys we’re very popular here in the north east before the saluki cross came along. 
Billy Doherty and his dad bred some great pure and cross deerhounds, (Doxhope), that performed great on hare and roe. My pal bred some top class deerhounds, (Seaton Valley Deerhounds). 
I haven’t allways been a “deerhound” man, I’ve had everything from Salukis to beddy types to whippets, even once had a collie cross ! 
I keep an open mind and as I’m now well into my 70’s I may just end up back with a whippet.

You can have great fun with a lurcher but sadly the days of walking the fields for hours daytime with a coursing dog are gone, the punishments are to Draconian. 
I still like a quick “on and off”, but do more lamping now, and the type I keep may not be for every one but they suit me .

Iv met a few dog men in me days but ole Bill is up there with  the best of them, my son spent a few hours in back of motor with him a coulee a times an still talks about it, one of the nicest most knowledgeable country men iv met

Yes, not just dogs but birds and all things countryside. He once asked if he could use some photo’s of my dogs in the update of his book “Deerhounds and Deerhound Lurchers “ and I sent him the pics, but the publisher said they were copies and not good enough and needed the originals which I sadly didn’t have. Again, a lurcher man whose dad had non-ped whippets !

Yip, birds infact most animals, an the old ways, he one the very few folk I met that genuinely impressed me, took me out a few times so he could photograph my ole Scottish terrier out ratting, an then come here ferreting, and done a bit of a photo shoot for the country man’s I think it was
