Training your lurcher to mark

Recommended Posts

I got myself a lurcher to work a bit of cover and mark any occupied earths. I'm curious how you all train your lurchers to become useful tools for a days digging foxes.

thank you

Dogs mark naturally, just got to watch them/learn how they do it. The reward is you getting whatever it is out

But be careful they don't false  mark,  only reward with positive  mark, bolt. Or put nets down to get the  fox then they deff know  what  the reward for.

If they false mark there won't be any reward or anything to get out....

You can't really train them to mark time and experience and they'll do it naturally....the biggest mistake I see people making with a young dog is encouraging it to mark warrens and when the dog sticks its nose near they praise it......automatically the dog will register that behaviour is praised and you'll get a false marker

Easiest way is to run a few to ground, watch how the dog reacts to where it’s dropped in, mental note of how he marks, them bolt it again for him

Always helps if the lurcher is a keen killer of foxes, a halfhearted fox dog will be a halfhearted marker of foxes I'm sure there's exceptions to this but it's what I always seen.

In my experience if it sees enough and likes them enough marking will come naturally.

About as animated as he gets, once you know their mark it's easy to see. He marked naturally,  he just stares at the entrance,  no digging,  no speaking,  nothing but a statue.
