tatsblisters 9,430
Started seeing a lot of grey squirrels now acorns and chestnuts aswell as beech mast are dropping to the floor and most of my shots at them are mainly on the ground due to not having a dog though i know it seemed better when I had the old lurcher with me as squirrels seemed to sit in a tree in view wile watching the dog giving me more shots than I seem to get now without a dog.

tatsblisters 9,430
Seen as it's only the grey squirrel i actively hunt these days with the catapult I have started to know their habits a bit better. I am usually out and about early mornings mooching about before the local woods and footpaths get more of the general public out and about though yesterday with the weather turning better i decided to have a walk late afternoon and saw ten times more squirrels than i do on an early morning though unfortunately a lot more members of the public that limited a lot of shots i could have got off.
Mr Wilkes 2,978
tats . I'm a early morning hunter, love the thought of being there when no-one else is, but a mate of mine goes out late afternoon and gets a lot. Like you say he gets mithered with dog walkers.

The main wood near me is a large public wood now owned by the council i believe and it's not very often even on an early morning its unusual not to bump into someone though it's crawling with grey squirrels. Also found when I go into nearby private woods the squirrels are a lot more wary and not as numerous.
Mr Wilkes 2,978
They get used to humans and dogs.. which makes culling em a lot easier. I hunt a bit of land that's keepered and these is quite a few greys but fook they're hard to get near.

Soon as they see you it's Chase on hoping for that 2 second stop lol. But sometimes never comes. Chased one yesterday on river bank fishing. My nephew didn't believe me that terrier stays by my side till I've taken the shot. Once a took the shot she was straight in cover. She was on the scent of it being there. But me being shit at shooting let her down. Edited October 30 by Bangersanmash
