Big cheese live catch trap

Recommended Posts

Ok so I put one of these at the top of garden last night , it was down near the house before and slugs were smashing the bait off the plate  , I didn’t bait the plate this time  . I threaded a piece of kite string through the small hole in the top  of the bit that holds the plate and had two liquorice allsorts suspended on it hanging a few inches from the roof over the plate , held them in place with a bit of matchstick as a bait stop under the sweets . This morning both sweets and bait stop are gone , string is still in place  but the trap hasn’t been triggered ??? …. Slugs ?

Too light and agile to trigger the plate , a bunch of wood mice will clear a trap of bait with glee. Even if the trap triggers they just escape through the holes . If you think it's  slugs  a  dusting

If you think it's  slugs  a  dusting of salt or a strip of the adhesive copper tape used by gardeners will deter them.20241003_075630.jpg.7f7f239d3d4b1acc17e9684f12e67094.jpg

You don't  say what you hope to catch, rats ,squirrels?

Tougher baits or wrapping a nice chunky bait in fine mesh might help.

Unless of course the culprit was  Bertie Basset on an SAS- type raid to rescue his chums.

No mate. I have been tempted in the past but never tried one. They reckon they are nice so I've been told.

Was to show what Comanche was one about have the bait in a mesh bag so to speak.

Squirrel  can  be  bland and begging for Bbq  sauce or spices.

Or ,get them after a good autumn  on mushrooms( the squirrels)  wild chestnuts and hazel  nuts when they've been flavoured by nature.

An Autumnal squirrel and bacon pie cooked by a friend's  wife could have graced a top restaurant.

Rats , want to know if they’re about , then I’ll get the gun out on em …. Tried copper tape , put it all round a piece of  white wall and dumped some peanut butter in the middle and they just glide over it , found 3 still on it munching

A better way to find out if rats  are about is to use your eyes . Runs  , damaged items . poo, and footprints are not hard to spot . Do a proper recce .

Setting a trap randomly is not a  great idea .  I'm picturing the unlikely event of  a particularly stupid rodent , a youngster with ADH or an oldy with dementia perhaps,  challenging a horde of peanut butter crazed slugs for possession of the treadle.

Yippee", you cry " l have rats ," and grab  a gun.   Maybe you do .....

But you shouldn't  need a trap to to know that .

It’s no big deal , just I’m not quite Sure so thought I’d see if I could get confirmation , the guns are there anyway . but I don’t fancy staying up past my bedtime or standing at the window for an hour if I don’t need to . The traps there so I thought why not use it to see if it catches anything and was intrigued as to how the bait was taken without tripping . Can’t see the harm in having  a live trap in the garden to see what’s about even if your Ray mears or Johnny kingdom

Could be slugs or a mouse ( not heavy enough to trip trap?? You could rebait and put something strong smelling under neath the trap where trap pan is. Put something heavy against side of trap so nothing can dig under . I once used big cheese trap to catch a customers  escaped hamster - worked really well !!. If your after rats try tie ing trap open for a few nights and just fill with corn or oats . Rats more likely to trip trap when used to it and happy to feed in it . If no joy pops cheap trail camera up and review footage ( E bay about thirty quid)

It’s slugs . I’ve caught them at it swapped the string for thick copper wire and they still grabbed the sweets just last time they chewed through the string …. Don’t want to catch the rats really , would rather shoot them tbh , more fun . Trap is here incase a ferret gets out , hopefully it would have gone for the biscuits and been safe till morning , but had a hedgehog taking the bait , it wasn’t too pleased to be detained , so I blocked off so hedgehogs couldn’t access it and set it again , biscuits going still so I became  inquisitive  and thought to take slugs out the equation I’d hang a bait off a thin kite string , didn’t realise they’d chew through it … lol ,the rats will be back , they always are because of pond , compost heap , bird food and a nice shed and decking to hide under …. I’m just becoming impatient awaiting their arrival…….

Had this trap out for squirrels last night put it on top of a stack of wood I checked it about 8am this morning and a big hedge hog had climbed up and got in it. Reset it on the ground under the feeders went up to lift then at 6pm tonight and this little tiny fella was in it.

Nice to see them though mate.

I'm after a bloody squirrel But he don't come every day or he's a smart one. He has trashed some of my feeders so I set the traps in the morning and lift them in the evening. But if I'm a little late in the evening hedgehog get in there.
