eastcoast 4,078
I had a young Russell living in the house whilst bringing him on that did not like getting his feet wet. Slightly annoying to me at the time as I loved to hunt along water, occasionally travelling for mink but usually rat closer to home. Just for the sport. This young terrier was just not happy with water, even pulling up at water when close on a rat and watching my others diving in to catch or at least try to catch. As he was live in most days I would exercise him in the park close by and he would chase and retrieve a tennis ball. One day a little mongrel Russell from the estate showed up and joined in. The other dog became a fixture and the two of them got on OK, my terrier usually getting to the ball 1st. The mongrel was great in water when throwing the ball into the park's small pond. Mine would pull up and concede possession. Much to his frustration when the mongrel got the praise for a retrieve. One day I threw the ball into water, they were neck and neck, then, my terrier didn't pull up at the water. He launched himself in and beat the mongrel to the ball and retrieved it. From that day on his aversion to water had gone. He went on to be one of those terriers that dive under water to get to a rat. Excuse my ramblings. Just trying to say that some dogs have a natural propensity for things, some have a natural aversion to things that they are capable of doing. Like jumping obstacles, we do not teach them how to jump because they can jump, but some need help in realising what they can do. Sometimes even the basic simple things. 3 Quote Link to post
gaza 508
Mine have never like water more than a paddle. Even though a lot of people say beddy blood likes water. My dads beddy whippet loved swimming though. Even the terrier aint too keen for the sake of it unless hes on something. Commanche is that dog a kelpie half cross litter on here a few years ago? THE STIFFMEISTER 15,576
I had a saluki grey hound who we nicknamed seal for his talent in the water he would regularly throw himself into a deep river pool near us to retrieve a floating stick , he had a huge talent for fetching back a stone thrown into water as he would literally swim under the surface to find it I’ve never seen a dog like it before or since , I once cooled him down at lowther show by throwing him in the pond there and he attracted a crowd who watching him swimming under the water . I’ve not owned a dog before or since who did that , he wasn’t brought up in any different way to the others , he just literally adapted to the water better than any other dog I’ve had in know it’s hard to believe, but he could genuinely swim under the water, like proper legs back , tail moving , never seen anything like it . 4 Quote Link to post

Brill that, pity you didn't vid it or pic. Been great. You are right though, some dogs just enjoy water.bryn and old Buck were both the same , I used to think really, that with Buck it was from copeing Bryn, that why he didn't like water as well, both were frckin wimps in water.but as said on here, the only time seen Buck really go in deep water was chasing a fox, he went right in , if he was on something and thought he catch it he was well up for it, must forgot about the water lol. Not hard to believe at all, seen it many times. When it comes to catching stuff that favours water my terriers where better than lurchers. Flat grass land with streams below land level? Ducks and geese, minding there own business, my terriers smell or hear them, ducks etc rise and terriers launch themselves and catch them before they have taken off in flight. I once owned a whippet that was clever and brave enough to to do it, never seen a lurcher do it. Quote Link to post
